It is no coincidence that Google chose not to update toolbar PageRank scores in a great deal of time before spreading more propaganda against paid links, and then launched a partial data push (how often do they do that)? This way when they finally update PageRank and many pages have a slightly lower PageRank score many webmasters will wonder "was I penalized?"

"If making PageRank function requires hand editing isn't that an indication that PageRank is irrelevant? Why not change they relevancy algorithms rather than trying to scare people?"

This point alone was worth the read.

"he is ranking better than ever in Google, even for his core category single word query, but his toolbar PageRank score dropped by one."

That says it all - it's a non-issue.

PageRank values rise and fall, but is irrelevant when it comes to traffic. And if traffic rises while PageRank falls, where's the complaint?

Pagerank can be lowered automatically because of adding to the site several outbound sitewide links. Sitewide links drain lots of PageRank from every page. This may reduce your PR because more PR could have flown to your deep pages and then returned to your main page.

I'm glad one of my sites went from PR6 to PR5.

My SE traffic has increased 2.5x to 4x over the last week.

another example of why PR means nothing
