It appears Google is now suggesting alternative URLs for mis-spellings and typos as well as simply correcting keyphrases.

Does this mean that registering domains that are common mis-spellings of popular domains will be less beneficial?

That's not a technique I engage in, anyway, but it's a fairly common "trick" for people looking to make a quick buck with a parked domain.
