Smart "2nd agenda" post written to promote their own new iPhone wbesite, LOL
Spot on business advice!
I am going to have to disagree, especially in todays economic climate. There is a difference in diversifing your time to the point where nothing beneficial gets accomplished and actually getting something done. So much of SEO is waiting to see what happens - then adjusting to optimize what you know is working. In that down time you should be working on seeding /building /consulting /other projects IMO. There is a fine balance of spreading yourself thin. Know where that line is and you are fine.
@BrianChappellWhile diversification is the ideal in this economic climate, I dont think its feasible for a lot of smaller webmasters and entrepreneurs. In fact, it will probably hurt them trying. Sure you can have 2 projects and "get something done" - but what would happen if you did 1 thing and got double the work in? I think this sort of momentum can be huge for a small business online - especiall new ones just starting out.I agree that much of SEO is about waiting to see what happens, but that doesnt have to mean youre sitting there waiting and doing nothing else. You can build community, promote via social media, come up with product extensions, build links, etc.Time is extremely limited and switching from project to project at the same time isnt optimal IMO.
@incrediblehelpWell I thought using the iPhone niche presented a good example... just because I dropped a link doesnt make it a "2nd agenda" post. :P
Its a tough argument. No answer is absolute correct. I think the more focus you put on one individual project the better ROI long term.
Good article, thought provoking and as the saying goes- jack of all trades master of non - a common problem when manging a web site.
