Jon certainly does make some excellent points in engaging your target for a ’real connection’ than a measly link, but that approach works best when both parties have something deeper to gain than search engine rankings. In my experience, about 10-15% of all targets fall into that ’deeper connection’ category, while the rest demand more scalable link requests.

I agree Wiep, this is the best statement in the comment:"The perfect link request email is one that doesn’t have a link request in it. Similar to social media marketing, it’s about relationships first, linking second (or never.)"
