Stoney's excellent article where he addresses both parties in the SEO / Client relationship and let each side know how best to relate to the other. Stoney's advice is brutally direct which is important because the roles and responsibilities in each SEO / Client engagement are frequenly misunderstood by both sides.

Great post by Stoney. In my industry we refer to something called 'situational management.' There are always those clients who are in crisis an demand triage services, I see the same in SEO. While it takes an extra effort to educate, it's not only good for you (the individual SEO), it's good for your industry.

I think Stoney's on the right track, but it's not as simple as even he lays out. The client situation that leads to the difficulties described, is one where the client has more needs than plug-in SEO services. How does the SEO respond to the client needing expert consultant services? "I know a guy who can help you... "

And if the client is like GoldRush2.0 online world, they are not prepared to pay for that expertise.  From what I have seen, the size of the company is proportional to their respect for consultants. Too bad. The best SEOs I know are business consultants ;-)

In my experience this is especially true of working with small businesses. Many times when asked we advise clients about the next step for their online business. Some small business clients jump head first into an online business without any plan and panic ensues. Education, as planetc1 mentioned, is very important in these particular situations. Setting expectations before the work begins is essential.
