theLisa has a bit of a rant going on tonight methinks -- So is marketing in social media equal to Spamming them? If so, I am an under cover Spammer working for Bruce Clay then... DAMMIT!!

SNIPPET; As I’ve already mentioned, my blood pressure was a bit heightened reading the recaps to this morning’s Effectively Leverage Social Media session. In it, Dave McClure, whom I respect very much and who is very intelligent, seemed to be advocating spamming Facebook’s News feed and tagging capabilities in order to market yourself and push content to users. He gave the example of tagging an SMX logo as “Vanessa Fox” or “Neil Patel” as a way of getting these people’s attention. As you can imagine, this quickly put people into fight mode.

Interesting.... I've been wondering this very question alot lately "When do Social Media Marketing tactics become Spamming tactics?" and I gotta say, a few of the "tips" I read in the recaps of SMX Social Media strike me as ways to create Spam. I'm glad that there was a clarification, and I think it is an important one "Marketing in the social networks does not equal spamming them. That is how you make your customers hate you."

Agreed - I still believe it is a very fine line. I think for me, a spammer would be automating his social media presence. If one is acutally participating in the communities instead of blantant self-promotion, then great. It does seem that success with a SM site does bring out the spammers and abusers though. There are even some Black Hat forums that have entire sections dedicated to Spamming SM sites though. A fine line indeed!

Why are our blog entries always described as "Lisa is ranting again..."?
