Cowboys.com sold for $275K at the TRAFFIC conference, apparently to a bidder representing the Dallas Cowboys. They don’t appear willing to go through with the deal, thinking they were only bidding $275 for the name.

Can they actually get away with this? How can anyone be so stupid as to participate in a high dollar auction environment without knowing the rules. If the representatives of the Cowboys are as stupid in their personnel moves as they are here, expect Joey Harrington to be your quarterback next year, not Tony Romo. Some Eagles or Redskins fan should snag this domain for their own purposes.

This is history in the making. Not only is a test of the value of .com domains in the aftermarket, but it is a stage for all sorts of precedent in the business world where domains are concerned. If Dallas screwed up this will alter corporate behavior in the domain aftermarket.Dallas dropped the ball at what would have been amortized as marketing expense at roughly $20k per year for 15 years, after which it would be free and probably a significant contributor to asset value. Yesterday it was $275k, today it sold for $360k, to domain investors. Today "cowboys" is synonymous with the Dallas Cowboys. What will it mean tomorrow if it is developed online for a country western affinity theme or a Pixar animated series or a perhaps a gay affinity site? The Dallas Cowboys own "cowboys" as a brand and just missed their first shot at owning it online. I wonder how expensive that education is...

It does seem incredible that they thought the domain was $275. Apparently the auction entry fee was higher than this. I think someone just got cold feet and lisened to the trademark lawyers. Yes it’s true no one can do anything on that domain that relates to NFL or the DallasCowboys but they have just lost the chance to secure/expand their branding. As you say John, "cowboys" is synonymous with the Dallas Cowboys - now someone else has a chance at claiming that brand space and they can’t do a thing about it. I imagine in time they will come round, but by that time the price will be 10x what they could have got it for now.

They won’t be able to cry foul on that either, having bought and then returned it now.

275K an they balked hasn’t TO been fined 275K by now.  Seems like pretty cheap, but I guess when you have the merchandising and promotional muscle of a nfl team they can get away with whatever domain they want.I was looking at PG’s brands domains...man do they suck at it.  Dawn dot com takes you to a pakistani newspaper.

Whoops...the thread just got interesting again.Apparently, "Innocent Bystander" who was calling the domainers a bunch of idiots for thinking the name was worth 275K was actually posting from an IP Block owned by the Dallas Cowboys.Perhaps we should now call the the Duh-las Cowboys :.)
