How about this quote:

"As long as people like Duffield are exchanging links without offering payment, or crossing obvious lines such as breaking captchas and posting spam links in guestbooks or comment forums, they're following the spirit of Google's Webmaster guidelines."

or this, after which the article goes on to explain how the Link Exchange Hero continues exchanging links:

"So Webmasters like Duffield turn to solicitations for links. Danny Sullivan, who writes about search-engine optimization for Search Engine Land, says "if you're a new site, absolutely you want to be doing link building. But you need to be doing that in a smart fashion."

The test is no better, than Michael VanDeMars (even more flawed, actually), but claims otherwise. Misleading.

Seth actually calls SEO "a glorious crap shoot that usually fails but is wonderful when it works."He got it wrong on two points:- there are lots of easy to rank phrases that bring targeted, well converting traffic- you can rank #1 for a targeted phrase, if you know what you are doingThat being said, I wish more SEO clients would also try to create better products/services that’d market themselves. It’s almost useless to SEO a site without an USP.Anyway, did Seth pull a Jason Calacanis on this one? I hope it’s just his unfortunate experience with SEOs and lack of SEO knowledge speaking. My thoughts at the SEO Refugee forums:http://cli.gs/uDsP4z

Well, they are still testing it, as far as I understand. It’s just they resumed testing without making it possible for web analytics to grab the referrer data, contrary to what Matt suggested earlier [that they’d resume, when they fix the issue].

Not sure, brsdas.Maybe people indeed think Google is just tidying things out.But I somehow don’t believe Google search engineers don’t understand how web analytics work. So if they do, they simply weren’t worried about how their change would negatively affect other web analytics (or, if they were, they simply went ahead and have done it, anyway, for the benefit of Google Analytics).

Yup, looks like a paid review without a disclosure, which violates FTC guidelines that Google treats like laws that Matt quoted here:http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/19/insidious-new-seo-ad-product-will-be-hard-for-google-to-detect/It also looks like he’s going against Google’s guidelines about selling PR, because it is not nofollowed and is given no disclosure on the nature of the link. Thus, it’s a paid link (I am only using Google’s logic here, not mine). This post might be of relevance (if only for amuzement) here:http://smackdown.blogsblogsblogs.com/2008/11/21/matt-cutts-if-this-paid-link-were-a-snake-it-would-have-bitten-you-in-the-ass/

The main reason for me to start a blog is to point people there, when they ask the same questions. However, I think it’s perfectly fine to discuss various things, an example of which is this very post by Ben.

If some of the commenters were bothersome, then they should’ve been dealt personally. Letting the members contribute content is one of the cornerstones of the web and user participated websites. Stopping a discussion from reaching the truth or a definitive conclusion is overdoing it. Sphinn members should decide for themselves, whether they should continue reading the discussion.I doubt having the discussion was too much a strain on the servers. I think close relationships of SEOmoz and Danny indirectly influenced this. I am totally sure, they didn’t think "Oh, we know Rand and Rebecca will grill us to death, if we don’t shut the thread", but the mods certainly have felt it.

I wonder if this is a response to various link building methods involving automation, such as tools, quizes, widgets, etc.For example, try searching for "Publishing Platform" or "Blog Platform" in Google. Wordpress.org is not #1, though we know it has 57mil links and the words in the title tag. Darren easily outranks Wordpress.org homepage with 320+ links. Then again, it could be anchor text, though.Possibly, this is just a consequence of them detecting the same link/nav blocks on websites, esp footers, and reducing their weight, though. Or it could be that more types of links became devalued. So it is not a "Glass Ceiling", but the strategies you use to get certain link types. That being said, I have heard rumors that even directory submissions do give absolute minimal value. For some reason, anything above is like trying to catch a black cat in a dark room, with no cat in the room. I guess I’d rather focus on building links the natural way, similar to Nick’s advice to ramp up the work.

Tamar, it’s obvious that scripts that automatically digg stories while you sleep are wrong, but can I use scripts that Digg the item from the story without going to Digg? Thanks.

Still makes sense to keep the different URLs, though.Large Luxury wallets for menLarge Luxury wallets for womenI wouldn’t want either to sift through all the wallets. Maybe there should be a balance, or we need to make sure the faceted pages actually are optimized (i.e., obviously unique and persuasive to the people).

Obviously, there should be a healthy balance of staying in touch and wasting time sharing meaningless stuff 5 hours a day. 20% of actions yield 80% of results, so that should be a good rule of thumb here, too.

I did promise to keep you posted (sorry for the delay). The job never went through, but overall it was a good thinking experiment. The most obvious way was to write awesome comments on dofollow PR6 posts to get links. But that’s the inefficient PR way. The most efficient way to build links is to create awesome content and promote it, of course.

I think the point is pretty clear. It is not who wrote the stories or who have submitted them. But how the Sphinn community can identify and vote up/down fake/bad stories. So far, it seems, the Sphinners prefer to vote first, read second.
