@Todd: Good point.

When this happens: * be in it for the money * increase usability * harsh criticism is effective * run the company with an iron fist * cut the optimism crapThe company becomes a place people dont want to work at, buy from, or otherwise be involved with. Except for the people who are in it for the money. But is that really what running a business is about? Just money?

@Todd: Care to elaborate on the ways to get around this? Do you mean get around it with Adsense or just getting around it by using other types of ads?

I really dont like the fact that Rand encouraged users to "game the system" on Alexa. Basically, we (as web marketing pros) know the sample size it too limited to make it worthwhile data. But were okay with that because we can use that limited sample size to game the system and convince big business that Alexa data is worthwhile. Talk about two-faced. Isnt this why everyone thinks anyone involved in online marketing is a spammer?

I agree with Swags in his fear of creating an elitist attitude. While I do think some things get blown out of proportion and over-sphunn, Im worried more about the false positives here. The weight-ing does help, but its still likely groups who think alike will start desphinning just because they dont like the writer/post/theme, not because its spam or not aligned with Sphinns overall story theme.

I agree with some of this, but I have to disagree with:
If we consider a notion that ‘clean’ SERPs = good user experience, and that too good a SERP = bad advertiser experience and that bad advertiser experience = low revenues
Why does a perfect SERP have to be a bad advertiser experience? Not every search is informational. Sometimes *gasp* people are actually looking for a company to buy from. The problem isnt that we (as advertisers) have to contribute to a poor user experience in order to make money, its that we want a quick payoff, and the easiest way is through these types of things. Oh, and just because something is idealist doesnt mean its wrong.

Only if they arent already bidding on those keyterms.

Arbitrage is not gray-hat; its taking advantage of an imbalance. Its not helpful for users, engines, or advertisers. IMO, the world doesnt need more middle-men.
Story: Should I DKI?
from AndrewofNagy 1491 Days ago#
I think DKI can be helpful, but not always. As is usually the case, youve got to look at each case individually. And this is where competitive research really comes in handy. If all the competitors on that phrase use DKI, then your ad will blend in. Also, using associated keywords can increase CTR sometimes more than DKI. For instance, someone searching "mortgage rates" who sees an ad that says, "Home Loans" in it will make the association. Once again, though, that doesnt always work either. The key is to treat each case separately.

Thats fair, but I dont think its unfair for NetSol to register those domains. Yes, their motivation is to make sure people register the domains with them, but they are providing a service. They dont have to let you search without an account. Like I pointed out, I think the real issue is that they arent up front about it and they dont let you turn it off. But if youve been around this industry for very long, do you really use Network Solutions? I would think most people would hate NetSol enough already not to use them. There are plenty of other registrars that will let you search for domains without registering, mydomain.com comes to mind. I thought I was contributing to the conversation in a reasonable way, I dont see why that got me a -1 in the moderation.

You know, honestly, I think I agree with IncrediBILL, but Id rather we had the ability to point out flaws in arguments and overhype and such with a little more objectivity and civility. That aside, I do think this is a bit overhyped. Network Solutions has responded saying that they do it to prevent their customers from losing domains they searched for. And if youre not a customer of NetSol, why would you use their search? The real criticism is that NetSol wasnt transparent about this from the get go, and they should also include an option to turn the thing off.
Story: How to contact Google.

Ive had this problem a few times as well with various websites. One of them is a purchased domain. The previous owner had been a spammer, so Google refuses to index the site, even though we have legitimate content now.

Well, Im relatively new to Sphinn, so I thought Id try to make a splash. :)Doesnt look like its working real well, though.

I found point #2 most helpful. Without passion, a business seems shallow and site visitors can often pick up on it.

I realize Im a little late to the conversation, but I feel like I should comment. Yeah, she might have been a bit harsh, but she specifically did not lump the entire SEO industry into one group here. I read down in the comments of her post and found this from her:I certainly dont mean to "slam an entire industry;" as I stated in the original post: "Techniques to make sure your relevant content shows up in corresponding searches is one thing -- inserting back-door code that is aimed at getting higher page ranks and more page views, regardless if the targets are actually correct, is another."I understand that most of us in the online marketing industry tend to get lumped in with spammers pretty frequently. Its the first thing I have to say when I tell a friend that Im in that line of work (no, Im not a spammer). But we should also be careful to not have such knee-jerk reactions.
