Thanks for all the input, I appreciate you reading the post and taking time to comment.FWIW, the second sentence says "The following best practices are only regarding the Search Engine Optimization reasons for blogging. You may need to weigh these against other reasons you may have for blogging". Hopefully one of those "other reasons" is communication :)

Someone got all upset, thinking we were suggesting changing the URL Way later, which is obviously an SEO no-no. By later, we mean like 20 seconds later. And even with that, do as we say in the last paragraph and 301 it in case crazy ole’ googlebot picked it up in those 20 seconds.

I don’t think it’s necessarily the brands themselves that downplay SEO. It’s the ad agencies that get paid a percentage of the PPC media buy that downplay, or downright ignore SEO. I think the brands themselves are just clueless, buying whatever latest .ppt their account exec shows them.

Not to detract from the flame war above ;) but I’d like to point out that if Google would simply start enforcing their so-called ban on subdomain spamming, then there would be no benefit to this and it would be a moot point. The sad point of fact is that not only is subdomain spam alive and well, it’s doing better than ever. Google "any city here"+apartments for a great example. Google needs to clean up their subdomain spam filled SERPs, then there would be no problem.Ok, back to the flame war :)
