Does this mean social media is not a Golden Egg? LOL@Rhae Awesome!"On the plus side, maybe all of the obnoxious "social media experts" will shut the hell up finally."
This is great! Have been looking for something like this to send to clients.
Story: Death of SEO Transparency
That is just one example. It really depends on the authority of the site for directories (of course I am not talking about popular SEO directories).True .edu do not carry additional weight, unless they have acquired many trusted links over the years. That is what gives them the extra trust. Those are the ones to go after :)Its not necessarily a numbers game with links - it is about trust. I will take one highly trusted link than 100 low-value links from blog post. Sometimes it only takes a few dozen highly trusted links to get into top rankings."And which is a more efficient use of your time and the clients money?"End of the day only thing that matters is getting clients top rankings.Dont get me wrong I am not discounting social media for links at all. It can be effective. Yet it is not the only option.
Social marketing is only "one" form of link development. There are many different methods to link building. Many techniques that worked in 2002 for top rankings still work today in very competitive fields.Of courses I am not talking about link farms such as submitting to 100s of low-quality directories, articles directories, press releases or reciprocal links. Those were all short-cuts and of low long-term value.Examples of long-term value links:- Getting your client listed in trusted, authoritative directories for their industry. These could range from standalone directories to the directory section of an industry group. Plus education and government sites.- Getting your client published on authoritative sites for their industry.Link building is just good marketing no matter what name you put on it. Something to think about

"Once Sphinn members have been active for 7 days..."What about the people who will maintain an extra account or two just to desphinn stories without having to take credit?
Yes but Wordpress doesnt NoFollow the majority of their internal links. Check out comments on the post at SearchMarketingGurus.com. I raised the point:"What happens when Google decides you are being "too aggressive" with NoFollows on your own site? When they decide it is over-optimized? That will cause a lot of collateral damage…"
Excellent point Wheel! "use nofollows not to tell Google youre using paid links, but instead know that youre using it to tell Google youre doing SEO. "
Great case in point: "Just turn to any of these powerful pages: USA Today Travel, The NY Times Travel Section, and Travel at LA Times and youll see top quality columnists publishing blogs, linking to noted resources within the context of the article or editorial sidebars, and incorporating social media tools. But, are these links maximizing the value to both users and search engines? How much did these links cost? If you think theyre free, think again."
"Not All Links Are Created Equal"So true...I will take "1" solid link from a trusted site over 100 blog comments or press releases.
"is there a bigger community of self-important whiners on the web?"ROFL My thoughts exactly
Scott- The issue is the webmaster on the other end receiving the promotion. Anyone who follows my link column at SEW or my link blog knows I advocate marketing to gain links. I also consult with other companies who use marketing for link development. Yes - there has been a decline in responses rates and straight links.
Does this mean China will now take greater action against all the other copyright infringement of music and video going on in the country? I doubt it. I bet
