Blatant self-promotion for a conference presentation using a poor piece of link-bait.

Nice case study, Tim! Pity of the many spelling errors and non-optimised title, though.

@Maurizio: I always found it somewhat unfair and of limited use that only the top-ranked website could get the old large pack (let’s call them the Maxi-SiteLinks), so in that light these new Mini-SiteLinks certainly are an improvement. The only thing I do not like is that it tends to clutter the page a bit with Mini-SiteLinks, news results, stock value, favicons, etc, etc all together.Do you think Google will expand the Mini-SiteLinks after a while to Maxi-SiteLinks? Or a combination of both with Maxi-SiteLinks for the top-ranked website and Mini-SiteLinks for several other websites on page 1 that have a clear navigation. Or Mini-SiteLinks for websites that only have a few SiteLinks and Maxi-SiteLinks for website with more SiteLinks. Have you noticed a maximum yet?

Yet another interesting find! Have you noticed that not only the top-ranked website can have Mini-SiteLinks, but also other websites on page 1? Also, it appears that more than one website can have Mini-SiteLinks and that the top-ranked website does not necessarily get Mini-SiteLinks, while other websites on page 1 may get Mini-SiteLinks (e.g. search for ’auto’ in Google.com).

Wicked! Here’s a third one, which I haven’t noticed before: If you enter a search term with many local search results (e.g. hotel or shopping) in Google Web Search and then switch to Google Maps, Google asks you to specify the location to narrow down your search. I’ve seen this in Google UK, Google DE, Google NL and Google FR. Obviously, it works in other local Google versions too.

Great article on image optimisation! Brian, to your opinion, what´s the value of a descriptive text from Googe Image Labeler in cases where there already is a descriptive image alt text?

Thumbs up for the people at LinkVoodoo.com! This is a great tool. It would be nice if the results could be exported to a CSV file, though. Something for the next version, perhaps?

David, I think it is yet another modification of Google’s algorithm in order to present more accurate (i.e. geo-targeted and lingo-targeted) or more personalised results to the user. I don’t think that the user’s OS language will be used, since this is a highly inaccurate factor. For instance, I’m using an EN-US operating system, but I’m neither American nor in the US. The patent (see paragraph 0050) mentions that the user’s preferred language will be determined server-side (probably from the IP-address).Although theoretically a good move, I doubt whether this change of the algorithm will function properly/fully, since the metadata (the meta language tag, I presume) are taken into account, which are frequently omitted. Ditto for the IP-address: what to do when a user is working behind a proxy server?

@Jill: Quite the contrary: we should all be using Google Analytics in combination with some script that reloads the webpage every X seconds. Mwahahaa!@Tadeusz: Do you care to tell us what the correct interpretation of the data is?

36. Not specifying the document type definition and language of each webpage;37. Using capitalisation of URLs, or -worse even- (see #38);38. Using multiple versions of the same page with and without capitalisation of the URLs;39. Not using a navigation menu at all or an inconsistent navigation menu;40. Not using custom error pages and properly redirecting visitors to and from those error pages, or -worse even- (see #41)41. Being sloppy in updating your HTML and XML sitemaps and removing dead links, just because you have a fancy custom error page that you want to show off to other webmasters/SEOs, or -worse even- (see #42);42. Not properly redirecting visitors at all;43. Deliberately using multiple links with different "optimised" anchor texts on the same page that all point to one other page in a desperate attempt to attract more visitors to your already crappy website.Does anyone care to continue?

@Zigojacko: Didn’t you know about the AutoPligg software from Syndk8 Toolshed for bulk submission to Pligg-based websites? Sphinn and all the other Pligg-based websites will get buried in spam if that becomes popular! Let’s hope they do not lower the price. Meanwhile, there’s not much you can do about it other than generously pressing the "Report as Spam" button.

A very recognisable account by Scott Hendison. It kills your enthusiasm for the project and occasionally makes you wonder how that client or company is able to survive with such poor financial management/insight. On the other hand, I would move on and wouldn’t worry too much as long as the client continues to pay the bill and he’s satisfied with what you do.

I found the attached PDF document not well written for several reasons (hence the desphunn):Important topics (e.g. PDF version, file size, fonts and PDF properties) are not or only partially discussed; The usability can be better (no hyperlinks in the table of contents, some blue text is hyperlinked and some is not); Some jumping to conclusions here and there (e.g. the use of snippets in search-engine results and formatting of text).

"What I DO mind is the "gated community" environment, where a select group of people all vote up each other’s articles, with little regard for the quality or originality of the articles’ content."I couldn’t agree more with you, Darren! Being a "close knit community" can certainly have its advantages, but unfortunately favouritism prevails here. Even articles about that magic blue pill and 4th of July search-engine logos are voted for. The favouritism displayed by the inner circle of Sphinn also dilutes the impact that the number of votes can have. Perhaps we may even witness Sphinn become the Digg of the internet-marketing industry in the near future?!

This is mandatory reading for anyone who’s into SEO, along with Michael VanDeMar’s article about hyperlinked headers, Randy Fishkin’s sequel about the first anchor text and Branko Rihtman’s experiment on nofollow PR sculpting to name a few.

It appears that URLs ending with .zip aren’t indexed either.
