PR (in this case) = Public Relations. Though you could always click through to check for yourself. Of course that wouldn’t let you drop a link would it ;)

Most accounts that I’ve seen setup by Google staff are awful. Maybe they would be better spending their time training their own staff?

100% agree. I’ve almost given up checking the upcoming section, at 9am GMT yesterday it was almost 100% spam submissions. :(

I have to agree with Rob on this one. The side effects of authority being such a huge factor in the alogorithm is huge news and informatio sites ranking for a lot of tenuous search queries. Until a couple of weeks ago a Guardian article entilted "Is it curtains for critics" was ranking top 10 for "curtains" in the UK. Undeniably ranking because of the deserver authority that the Guardian site has built over time, but helpful to have it ranking so high for a query that almost certainly has commercial intent, not really.

@montis I have to say I agree also. As a commercial channel blogs are only just getting started.

Personally a lot of my blog posts are written to help educate clients. I try to pitch posts as something that a small business owner would want to read. As others have said, there’s little point writing for other SEOs, that’s not going to gain a client or help and existing one - that’s just building your ego.

@debram It’s all just speculation at the moment. I doubt there with be any information made public anyway.

I don’t reacall Matt Cutts selling medical devices either, but that doesn’t stop him posting reviews like these, http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/my-favorite-pedometer-omron-hj-720itc/I’m also seeing some fairly optimised anchor text within that review.I completely agree that Sumo were stupid in their choice of targets and the fact it was so blatent. However I’m struggling to see much difference in their actions to what can be read into Matts post above.

@ zigojacko I have not yet had the opportunity to use Twitter much, as I am in the UK and it isn’t really that big over here yetReally? There’s loads of UK SEO people on there, well worth signing up.

>>It all comes down to the fact that Google wants to credit links that are editorial. Is sending out products for review not editorial? Going back several years I worked in publishing across several trade journals, sending out products for review is the oldest mehod in the book for getting product based editorial. The biggest problem at the moment is nobody knows where Google has drawn the line in the sand.I’m pretty sure that this penalty (if it is indeed a penalty) is a manual one.

I agree with Nick here. You can discuss the issues without having to ’call out’ a company for doing it. Google always argues that it deals with issues like these algorithmically, so singling out a single company rather than the issues doesn’t help anybody.

Nice to see, its obvious, but often overlooked that page titles and description tags should be compelling as well as include keywords. Too many people just stuff in as many as they can. Yopu only have to look at AdWords ads to see what a difference CTR can be.

It looks like there’s going to be a lot of pressure on Digg to ban some of the big blind Diggers or lose their credibility.

Thanks Nick, some really good feedback :) 1. I’m currently testing this at the moment. A couple of people have mentioned it to me before. Although I don’t believe it overrides any TLD or hosting factors I have seen lots of .tv, .fm, .cc domains ranking in the UK serps that are not hosted over here - It may go some way to explaining that. I firmly believe that registrar location and whois data is another factor that should be considered.2/3. I’ll add that in. I’m certain it’s not used for search engine location purposes, but you’re right, it should probably be included.4. That’s interesting. When you’re talking about, “one should still try and get at least 70% of links from sites on the same language for ranking purposes.” are we talking about location in local versions of Google, or "ranking purposes" as in benefitting from the language used in the anchor text and surrounding page text? Either way it’s a point worth noting.Personally I’ve not seen anything that suggests the location of the links overrides any hosting or local TLD factors - not saying they aren’t used at all though.5. Very true, those of us in the UK are sometimes guilty of focusing on Google a little too much sometimes, though it does become more painfully obvious when larger international companies get things wronghttp://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=wikipedia&btnG=Google+Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK|countryGBThanks again Nick, with your permission  I would like to include some of what you’ve written here in the post?

Another idea from Google that seems great in theory but falls down in practice! Before long with all of the manual paid link reporting and manual reporting of fake stories they’ll turn into Mahalo ;)

Quite possibly, but then you come back to the whole censorship argument ;) I can’t help thinking though that if it was a penalty along thsoe lines it would have taken the form of a PR reduction.

There is a theory that it’s possibly down the the link trades/sales being done on the forum. If indeed it does turn out to be a ban I’m still guessing it’s down to the quality of the traffic though.

This kind of reflects the level of SEO knowledge at DP recently that the guy hasn’t been laughed out of there already.I used to post on DP a hell of a lot, but it’s become frustrating competing the ’noise’ that the forum generates.

I’m sure if it’s happened once it’s happened again. I’m wondering what Pepsi and Coca Colas lawyers would have to say about the same thing happening to them?

In all fairness.......>>was saying we have 3,200 linkbacks to our domain on certain keyphrases. I did a quick "phrase -site:oursite.com" and found that there were only around 800 legitimate ones from the outside world. In this case the SEO may well be correct, the link: operators in Google can hardly be taken as an accurate representation of all the links pointing to a page. I’m guessing the SEO got their info from Webmaster Tools.

>>Not 1,500 unique links I reckon?Yep, 1500, I’ve had a site get 17,000 from a Digg front page, so it’s not such a leap of the imagination.https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/advsearch?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.scrollovers.com&bwm=i&bwmf=a&bwms=p
