Agreed. I think the engines have forgotten what it is their supposed to do for the past couple of years - give me the best results, not the greatest number or diversity. That means you probably only need index a few thousand sites to give great results for most queries.
@trickster should have let me know. Im pretty good at getting stuff on the homepage.
Hate to say it @ggallucci but I agree with Danny. I think youve kinda missed the point I was trying to get to...
From my PoV (Im sure Tim will pop in later to respond), whilst there might be less competition in areas other than the "big three", theres also less interest, so its harder to get votes on them.Good point though. Would be interesting to see number went hot vs number in category data
Why? Its something that people should know about, that no-one really talks about. Surely thats exactly the sort of stuff that should be on the homepage?

"youll have to bear with those of us that actually like to read something that challenges our thought process and delivers some unique value every once in a while"Bugger. And I do so love that mindless stuff and noise...*Sad face*

@cathubodua Hey there! Make yourself at home. You been in the industry long?
@sugarrae so what ratio would you set desphinns as? Ive always worked on the theory of about 3/1 or 2/1 (so youd need one third to one half the de-sphinns to kill something). Where would you go?
Just as a quick afterthought too... We had one of the most sphunn posts ever once (hit the top fifty in greatest hits, still probably top 75ish), and it sent a little under 900 visits. Thats not exactly Stumble/Digg/Reddit levels is it?And dont go on about "quality of traffic" either, because its not that much better. Id rather have Stumbles.Seriously, hitting the Sphinn homepage isnt that big a deal for you. Write for the community. You may as well, because passing on knowledge is the only thing youre going to get out of it.Disclaimer: no that doesnt mean well be removing the Sphinn links on the Searchlight Digital blog. Just saying...
@bbcarter agreed. But how do you get people on here when they cant see any content thatll interest them? And the community wont send their posts hot, because its not interested, and so theyll get bored because they see no success, and leave.

Sphunn for the irony of wanting to see a guide to Sphinn on the Sphinn homepage
@mphung So youd take it down to 15ish, so the rubbish would get desphunn faster?
@sugarrae Im not asking you to :p Ive got nothing but respect for you and those in your position. And I agree completely. Im just saying Im not sure your solution will work, because what you think of as homepage-worthy and what the community at large thinks of as homepage-worthy might not be the same.My only worry is that youll sorely dissapointed that the community isnt as good as you think it is.
All due respect Rae, this went hot because YOU wrote it, and YOU and Michael talked about it. If Id posted this, itd be ignored, unless I get people like you, Michael and so on to talk about it.
