I love the solid color background strategy - Matt McGee does it well. But my favorite avatar of all time for personal branding and avatar recognizability is Tadeusz Szewczyk of onreact.com - it’s funny, has good color, is consistent across sites and carries over to his blog. Love it.
I’ve always suspected this. AOV on contextual clicks is always lower for me.
