Thank you Sphinners & thank you for the compliments akomack and MattMcGee! I'm honored to receive the Editor's Choice on this post. Thank you thank you thank you! :)
Tired of seeing sphinn moderation types of sphinns up here. And I agree with Matt McGee.
hmm...wonder why sphinn didnt catch it. sorry. :) consider the original one sphunn!
Rishil posted a link that dates back to December 28, 2008 in the comments on this post. The results displayed were from Google UK...so it appears this is semi-worldwide at the moment?Credit for this find goes to Rishil: http://holisticsearch.co.uk/2008/12/28/the-impact-of-longer-snippets-on-seo/Any earlier detection of longer descriptions or snippets in Googles serps?
This is a little misleading: "More-targeted keywords tend to cost less..."Targeted keywords usually cost MORE per click...but theyll cost less in TOTAL spend per month or week or day because fewer people are searching for those targeted terms.Of course it depends on your industry and the competitiveness of it in search advertising...so I suppose my statement probably only applies to competitive industries on the web.
Desphunn...the sphinn moderation problems topic is tired. Thats only my opinion though.I enjoy the "Guide To" posts that compile a ton of posts in one...i do wish credit would be correct but that can be corrected via comments. For me, it is convenient to bookmark one post vs 50 posts...etc.
I personally dont mind the feature...naturally, some of my concerns are the same as others - what about spam? I dont know if I really want my username to be displayed next to my comments...and I think I want a way to opt-out some of my other google profiles because I dont want to see or know about comments/other votes/etc when I am using certain accounts...would it really be that hard to implement some privacy features?
This feature alone is awesome: Converts percent values to absolute values in tables. Nice work!
@SEOmoz - I think you should share the damned bot and allow robots txt to block it. I hate to say this - and ill probably get a bunch of negative sphinns - but I would be willing to bet that less than 5% of the community is going to actively block SEOmoz bots, scrapers, etc. from their sites. Less than 1% will probably even blog about it and the reach of sharing that technical data will actually be more limited than you think. The rest of the web wont even know what happened. There are millions of websites and millions of webmasters - your linkscrape tool will still be relatively accurate given all other tools currently available. You will maintain your marketable edge. I would argue that nothing would really be lost by telling the community about this data. Just give it up already! Even cuil was cool enough to give us their bot info.
Tamar got it right...I agree that the ad was meant for Woots regular audience.I also agree that the ad had bad taste given the placement. Woot = FAIL with this ad.
I wonder how the BusinessWeek Business Exchange (Duct Tape author) ads on Sphinn are doing...And I need a new avatar...

Any suggestions for making this tool more accessible via the AdWords API? Im sure that might be stopping some from downloading/trying the tool. Thoughts?

The tool will take some time to continue building...lol. We want to see Yahoo! in there sometime...and the ability to add/delete keywords and ultimately, the ability to edit/write ads from there too.

Thanks Jeff - We hope it helps! It took quite some time to write/compile it! :)
Lol - I guess so, given their current standing...its got to be frustrating for SEOs though when Yahoo! is still number 2 in the game. Thanks for your opinion Jill! :)
Any SEO opinions on this? Paid organic listings taking precedence on highly competitive terms over well optimized, more relevant sites?
I wonder how Google would use the technology...given that Digg seems to have struggled with getting their users to really pay attention to their advertisements. Would the Digg algo be used for something else entirely?
Really quick - and I should have put this in the post - but the inspiration behind this plugin is that I actually enjoy getting messages from people who link to our site because receiving messages like that does not happen very often. I hope you like it if you use it! Enjoy!
Rereading your comment - I do see your point. I think the scummier end of the web will always abuse stuff rather than use it appropriately...its their nature and they do it with everything they can. To make the tool useful, you will need to customize your email message and make it feel more natural/personal than a spammer could if they crack it and spam a little bit with it. It isnt designed for spammers and we took some precautions to keep the ordinary user from spamming but that doesnt stop the scum from spamming - I dont know if anything will stop that...
I love using different profiles for different functions as discussed in the post...one of the biggest reasons I separate my extension overloaded profile from a vanilla profile is so I can actually focus on my reading or writing with the vanilla profile without getting distracted with analyzing pages, advertisements, etc. Its quite refreshing to take a step back and read some good blogs or books without any extension distractions. :)
Well, its quite manual - not automatic at all. We designed the plugin so it only allows one message per link...after that, the function is disabled. We did it with spam in mind - and are trying to make sure it isnt abused that way.The user gets to pick and choose who to send the message to, when to send it, etc.Its really quite useful. Check it out and see for yourself...you wouldnt have jumped to that conclusion had you watched the video or downloaded it and gave it a spin. :)
