Any SEO company who is losing leads to competitors because of it definitely has a lawsuit on their hands.

It is a shame that we've let our industry get run over by a company with these types of practices. IMO, they should change their model to something more legitimate (how hard is it anyways?), and we can just scratch it off and move on.

That was a great analogy! Some of those tools (like link diagnosis.com) i never heard of. On the other hand, I use a couple of others, that really aggregate some of the tools ur using, including SEO for firefox, seoquake, semrush, and seomoz.org

I always felt a little outmoded using Adwords Editor and excel sheets to update bids -even though it’s been phenomenally effective. I believe there is opportunity for automated bid systems to fish out opportunities, and creating rules that are customized to your’ needs can potentially go a ways towards to cranking out a couple more sales for your’ marketing dollar. The concern you address as far as what the goal of the campaign is, I think would be better addressed if you break down the ads into campaign buckets by goal, and then used rule based bidding to manage that.Rules based bid solutions aren’t that expensive, and I’ve always found that the more complex a solution is,  the less useful it is in the real world. I recently demo’ed a service, and I found I was doing a much better job in parts of it just with handy excel sheet.

Haha, I love it when people do stupid things like stop investing in their future. If you’re in a crunch the place to cut is your brand advertising, not your direct response. It’s not a line item.Although, you never know how their affiliate program is going...

@ footinmouthdisease"Obviously, a filter for the "dirty signal" would be to weigh their profile’s credibility. The more credible the account, the stronger the indicator. Common sense would indicate that TIME is a crucial part of Google’s Trust- currently with sites and domains, It would by extension indicate older profiles with regular search activity would have more weight. You’re telling me that there’s a bot out there that can get past capcha, present unique I.p. information and run a realistic pattern of searches as it ages until at some point in the future it gets triggered along with a thousand others to thumb down a wiki result?"You could create a couple hundred fake google profiles, have them filled out, used, aged and friended with some "monkeys" or interns. This isn’t that far off for a determined and evil competitor - and there are lots of those, but yet somewhat unlikely to happen. It makes sense that it’s just a small subset of a datapoint. Yet it makes me uneasy when I think about the games to be played with this type of stuff.Google has been pandering alot to social results, and relying on external sites for social approval datapoints, and it’s kinda high time a search engine made themselves look for social proof datapoints internally. However, it’s kinda scary to think about. IMO, Digg and the other sites are easily gamed, and a service like searchwiki even more so. Should i find out that there’s a point where they are using search wiki, and could "justify to myself" why my competitor shouldn’t be in the search results -and have big enough motive to screw them, it’s very possible to do - and I consider myself ethical.

@ Tamar From what I’m seeing, the industry is growing extremely fast. You have tons of people that are being brought in as interns, and then just moving up. SEO/SEM is one that is still underserved, and is/will be exploding over the next 5-8 years. Most business owners - including CEO’s haven’t really got the hang of how much ROI there is in search vs. other mediums. We don’t have as many of our fancy metrics and rating out there like radio and TV / Print have, and people don’t just "get" how many people are searching online...There are no college courses (I’m a college dropout) on it, and standards are changing all too quickly, so it only makes sense that most of the people in it would be quite new.

I’m going to guess that google will only use this for personal search. Similar to your web history results, it’s not going to affect the world, because then I would be able to use this on my competitors sites. Instead, I believe that perhaps a large scale ranking, from verified users that ranks an article up or down will change the algorythm, otherwise, it’ll remain as a feature of personal search.

BTW, this whole "google doesn’t use manual review is BS... It doesn’t take much for them to set a full time Google Guy from india on the case. And now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t think I’ll be using inlinks for any of my quality sites. :(

@JoshuaSciarrino, I think PR served an important purpose, in simply providing a way to organize the web. As far as browserank being more effective than PR, I would have to agree. This next step of using social feedback (kind of like analytics - providing feedback on what pages are valuable) to make the SERPS better are definitely the next step in SEO.Included in that is personalized search, the decreased reliance on PageRank, Google Search Rankings features, and other feedback tools.Neurorank is definitely to come, sometime - but it’ll take awhile, I’m gonna guess a minimum of 6-12 years. However, google is far past that. I haven’t tested it myself, but I have it from one of my "SEO underground guys", that Google probably uses their Google toolbar stats to test bounce rates and other data. They also use social media, and they can/have all of the data that Microsoft is using, just in much larger datasets. But at the end of the day, everything can be gamed. Social media can be gamed, time on site from external sources can be gamed. None of them are perfect, even neurorank will be able to be gamed. The difference is that it will be more complex to game, and much more accurate for users.True Social media concepts will never die either. Us humans thrive on it, it will just morph.I’m really not worried about going out of business as an SEO though. In fact, I look forward to the day where i don’t have to bother with annoying link building practices, my keyword research is more accurate and spot on, and I can focus on additional fun parts of web-marketing, like analytics, core branding from a direct marketing standpoint and more.

Haha,That’s why I’m not on the list either, huh? Well, I’ve got to admit, I haven’t created enough content to be considered a thought leader... as long as I can pretend that I’m anywhere close to Michael’s stature.Oh, and Michael, if it makes you feel any better, I’m following you ;)

I’ve had this type of questionairre in mind to help my clients, and I’m glad to see someone put it in action! My suggestion is to turn it into something a bit shorter, and less tech oriented, so that you can use it as a lead gen tool on your site.

This also has the potential to create the motivation for facebook trains, just like the myspace trains used to help for SEO... But I think it wont be as bad...

I dunno. Some of these clients just end up paying the bills. If they’re not happy later on, then deal with it then. I wish I had a better solution other than, either take them or don’t take them. These guys just don’t change :(I mean, if you want to be picky, just put in the original contract that one of the things required is FTP access, and timely responses to all SEO suggestions. This way, it sets the expectation

Agreed, many SMB’s are hurting for more leads... Additionally, traditional advertisers don’t plan on cutting down on online marketing - not when there’s positive ROI. Unless the whole economy goes down the tubes, online marketing is probably the best place to be right now.

I have to agree with the commentor’s that say that there’s nothing wrong with putting anchor text in your username. I have no problem giving someone a relevant link if they took the time to add to the conversation

I plan on using it with multiple IP’s so I can work on different clients... (not to spam, I promise)... I think it’s the easiest solution to have all of your passwords etc. saved.

Craig, you’re right - and thanks for reminding us. However, some of the transparency did make things suck too... Remember doing the bidding game with overture? Bidding right under the comptetitor? It was fun, but knowing the exact numbers of your competition sucked...Maybe I really am drinking the "Click Forensics Kool-Aid" to the extreme - have an external agency monitor the data. But altogether, I don’t think much will change. Either way, the market will price itself to the budget that advertisers can make search work for them.

Interesting concept :) I’m still wrapping my head around the .me domains - which have a tremendous potential. I’m not that enamored of the .seo extension, unless it’s turned into a "you need to be accredited by xxx organization" to own the .seo domain. I don’t think it will give the company using it additional branding value. The only value is that you could get a domain you couldn’t buy otherwise.

For the google and yahoo searches, I use the searchstatus plugin... right click on the query line and hit the Google and Yahoo searches... But I guess typing in y or ys is alot faster. I’ll have to try it.
