I think worrying about linking and getting exposure took a lot out of the joy of blogging for me. I have finally gotten into the groove, but only by throwing out all this linking advice. I try to promote people and things that I found meritous, that I think others might get something from. And I think that getting someone like Time to promote you or a bunch of links is no guarantee you can keep people’s interest if you’re boring or don’t like what you’re doing. So I would say first and foremost, blog about something you’re comfortable, confident and competent doing and let your reputation grow as you provide value and people start to see you as someone credible and reliable.

The trick is to expect failure and learn what you can from what doesn’t work, and what does work, to make your way to satisfaction and success. What they don’t tell you is planning can be a VERY messy process, where your plan keeps breaking when you try to use it and you have to keep remaking it so that you eventually get it to work.

I don’t think lists are very useful, they’re overwhelming if they get past 5 or 6. I would say, pick the best 5-6 per category and post those, do a different category the next time and repeat.
