So what do you want Sphinn to be? A community with no activity at all? Yes, the submissions you seek won't be as advanced to meet your expectations, but Sphinn is a community for all levels of Internet Marketing users.
Granted, I'm personally kind of frustrated of blogging about social media because the truth is, how many times can I say the same thing? The lessons will always be the same. That said, the "nothing new" argument may still be said amongst the more advanced users, but it will be valuable to the users just starting out.
I guess I can respect your decision to Desphinn this article Anita worked on if it truly was done for the sole purpose of you not finding value in it. But you mentioned link juice and backscratching too, and neither of those and my decision to submit it (and Sebastian's to promote it) is anywhere near the truth.
I just want to add something of interest.
If someone submits an article to his/her site and/or with links to his/her site, thereby using the argument DVOLA is worried about, and the content was good, I would exercise my right to promote the content to the front page. That's what editors are here to do.
That said, DVOLA, if you're going to Desphinn something, please exercise responsibility and Desphinn it because it lacks value. If your problem with the submission is "omg an editor promoted it and I think that's backscratching," well, quite frankly, I think that's Desphinn misuse. That's my personal opinion, but that said, keep in mind this line from the guidelines:
"Desphinning simply means that the user did not find the story interesting personally."
So if you're going to Desphinn, please do so becasue it isn't interesting, not because you're worried about a link and the implied (in your opinion) backscratching.
DVOLA, I actually hadn't realized it was submitted with a link back to my site, and even if it hadn't contained a link, I would have submitted this in a heartbeat. Do you not think there's a value add *at all* in this submission?
A bit about me: I don't really care about link juice. I deal with more social media marketing over SEO, and links to me are just links. They don't sway my habits.
DVOLA - You're mistaken. This is not my site. I participated, yes, but the comment in the submission was excerpted from the article. If you're going to Desphinn something, please use due diligence to determine if what you are saying is accurate. As an editor, I personally could have promoted this to the first page, but it was promoted by another editor.
Michael - yeah, I do understand that most people are less likely to host with their registrars, but usually I see that being the case when the company is primarily a hosting provider (e.g. BlueHost, MediaTemple) versus a domain name registrar (primarily) that offers hosting as a bonus.
It's your choice - but full disclosure - I do work with NameCheap. That said, I still wholeheartedly recommend them; I've been using their services since 2005 (before I started working with 'em).
@Danny - I think that's the point, though. Based on a specific experience Jeremy has encountered, there's still a misunderstood perception of what SEO is. It's really not only a #1 ranking.
With all the other social sharing icons on this blog post, I'm surprised there is no Like button on this website at all...

btw, in general, for more eyeballs, it might be a good idea to write a more detailed title and description for Sphinn (and especially write how it relates to Internet Marketing). Otherwise, you're throwing off the reader and the article won't get very far in terms of votes since the title and description as-is looks rather spammy. Good rule of thumb is to write for the users if you want the submission to garner votes! We're pretty dependent on it. :)
