wow ... great TechCrunch scoop Duncan ... reported on this about a year ago

I see this expanding as more and more universities are adding Internet security as part of their ciriculum and Google is the doorway to the Internet.
Amazing that this article was originally drafted by Matt in 2005, and the tips are still highly relevant. Lesson : creativity pays off.
Ture that Ken, and there are many many ways to attract and pursue links, via the old push pull disciplines in traditional marketing and public relations :)
Steve, I only bring up paid linking via advertising networks as one consideration. It's really up to the end user to decide whether or not they want to do so, and whether or not they want to use nofollow, a java redirect or organic methods.
Don't let FUD misdirect the core of the conversation.
No seriously, I've found Twitter a great way to connect with the people behind the news in not only an industry way, but a fun and networking style approach.
Story: Ask.com Kills Search Engine
they more or less invented blended search, or were the first to have the balls to implement it
Because Michael's post was only one line and old news as Google Maps in blended results have been around for a while. Eric's post however looks deeper into the expansion of Google Maps in blended results AND links to Michael's as the hattip for getting Eric's research started. That's why. Did you read the post?
@Gab Desphinning this saying it is a link post is a very inaccurate reason to desphinn (see above comment). Totally uncalled for.
Woah, I was just cleaning out my domains and noticed this one is a gem. Better to offer it to the community of readers or a business person in its niche field than let it go to little or no use, wouldn't you think?
By offering a strong site to an interested business person, I do not see that amplifing the saga of the reputation of SEO.
On a positive note, I guess I finally jumped the shark, nice :)
Thanks for the mention Dan! We launched the SEJ Search Marketing Jobs Board on Tuesday and have had a lot of positive feedback. It's refreshing to see how many openings exist in the market :)

ALT.com and AdultFriendFinder are perfect sites for Penthouse... way to go! Now I can write off my magazine subscriptions!
Thanks. Be sure to Delicious and Stumble the article ... so more people will save time on their homework :)
Just a note, I'm not saying to make these changes to influence Google, but as an alternative to other reasons you may want to block WhoIs information. Like hiding sites from your boss :)
Good point Greg, and like I said in the post, I did not lose any sleep over it, but I think there are many Digital Pointers and other bloggers who are sh!tting their pants over this right now, and exposing them to the sounds of the calming waters, may help them weather through a self proclaimed storm.
great point onreact, and the major reason why I was surprised Amazon did not purchase stumbleupon. do you see eBay stepping in to purchase a basic search engine technology, like Gigablast for example, to stick these reviews to and offer their own community search? I would have expected eBay to purchase a major search technology, but given the skype issue and ebay stocks taking a drop from them overpaying, maybe a small engine fits the bill.
Story: 3 Steps to Solid Linkbait
Some Search Marketing firms charge anywhere from $100 to $200 a pop for links from 'authorities.'
Link bait can result in hundreds of links for one project, usually between $1,000 and $5,000. That's link bait which follows the route of brainstorming, conceptual, writing, publishing correctly, and marketing. Do the math, and even a successful $5,000 linkbait project will result in links for less than $20 a pop... if successful :)
Especially if your site is a porn site, then you have the best of both worlds :)

better?
moral or agenda based arguments aside, it's a great analogy
Matt said that a while ago I believe... and what exactly is a while?
I think they still watch it, those in SEO and those outside of SEO. I had a boss at a company that wasn't involved in search, actually an english school. I told her about an ecommerce site which shipped to Japan (the school was there).
She responded that she wasn't going to buy off of the site, because Google said it was a 3. And she only bought from sites Google ranks highly. She also thought that Google only showed ads for quality filtered sites in GMail.
Goes to show, the quality of the little green bar is in the eyes of the beholder.
If a company like HackerSafe can walk around claiming that their button increases sales conversions by 5%... I wonder how PageRank influences buyer behavior?
Note : The promo code is SEJ100.
So you don't have to click over to the site for it, if you don't want to ;)
