Marty - you read my post, about "why JC for a third time", I feel the same way. Although Danny didn't give him an entire cakewalk, I don't think he expected Jason to be such a jerk either. The people from Kelsey group had not clue either what a jerk he could be, until perhaps a 1/2 hour before he went on when I told the AV guys, "watch out for the F bombs" (and they thought I was kidding!)
I think as a whole, as a community we can ask some decent questions. I think this is actually a good chance for us to stop sitting back and complaining about how he's more like the "Snake Oil Salesman", truly manipulating search with Mahalo. This is where we can ask the questions that need to be asked - come on, I know you got a few!
Oh and just to clarify - SMG is only collecting the questions, Kevin, is going to be actually ASKING them. :)

I'm also one of those people who was intereviewed for the book, and I was so floored and honored by being asked to do the interview. Michael Miller emailed me and asked if I was interested. I never lobbied to be interviewed. I don't think anyone in the book lobbied, everyone was just asked.
I actually had no clue who else would be in the book - so I kept quiet (except to my mom and Christine Churchill) about it. When I got the press release and found out who else was in it, I was floored, and humbled that I was included with some of the people like Greg, Heather and Jill who've I've looked up to for so many years.
I don't consider myself a "hero" by any means. Like Eric, I believe heros are folks like my Dad, and Uncle, my neighbor who fights in Afghanistan, my friend who serves tirelessly to help the blind. Those are true heros.
I actually feel sorry for you, Sam, that you felt compelled to be so mean and write such a sensational description. Every person in the book is someone who has felt so compelled to give back to the industry that maybe that's why Michael chose them. We write, we speak, we will stop and reply to an email if we can help out ... we all give back. None of my colleagues really deserved that slap, instead they should be applauded for the tireless hours of great contributions they give back to the industry.

While he didn't visit us (SMG), he did grace the charity bash in nyc at SMX Social, and showed off that very 'hawt' tank top. LOL
have to say - the best information i get is from people who aren't even involved in the SEO Realm - folks like Shel Isreal, Jeremy Owang, Geoff Livingston, just to name a few.... not to say my SEO friends aren't informative, but what twitter gives you is the opportunity to reach out and know people in industries that touch ours........ gives a wonderful perspective!
If i have one tip - it's don't limit yourself to just people in this industry ... branch out and follow someone who might know what search optimization is, but doesn't necessarily include it as the #1 incomer earner in their portfolio :)
You really need to use it, to understand it's full potential. Build out your network and pay attention. Twitter can be a fantastic resource if used and implemented properly by businesses.
NY Times, SEL, Techmeme and ESPN feed out their latest news stories (this is PUSH technology, not PULL like and RSS reader), I know what's out there as it appears on the site and click on what I want to read - not sort through the stuff I don't.
Companies like Woot put out their daily specials - I bought my Roomba because of Woot's tweet on twitter.
Politicians are using it to announce rallies, or special events on their sites or blogs (Ron Paul/ Barack Obama) - before Thompson dropped out he used to to announce he was doing live blogging.
Sure there's a lot of small banter that goes back and forth, but there's also a lot of information you can pick up! I found out about a bunch of tech stuff going on in the philly area because of Twitter (podcamp, indy hall, etc.)
It's like any other "medium" unless you invest a little time into understanding it - you just won't get it. Totally fine if you can't invest the time or it's not your thing, but don't diss it before you can really say you've invested time into it,

Bill Slawski is always giving - take a look at his participation on Cre8asite forums. If you have a question about something, Bill ALWAYS takes time out to answer, or call and never expects anything in return.
Bill has given so much in the way of knowledge to this community that its very hard to phathom what this industry would be without him. Where would techcrunch get it's content to steal about pattens without Bill? Where would startups be with out a little advice from Bill.
The man just has a heart of gold. Yes, I'm a little biased, he's my coworker, but I thought this long before he and I ever worked together. If one day Bill decided to start charging for his information - we'd all be in the poor house.
I have a question - why use pepperjam as your example? "Outting" competitors like you have in your post isn't really a cool thing to do, even if you are showing off a cool tip. A few months back this type of issue pissed off a lot of people especially when page ranks dropped, etc. after the outting.
Why not have looked at some other company like trafficpower - who's already been outed by Google for unethical practices - for your example? It makes people wonder if this is just inexperience, revenge or just being done for link bait. By pointing fingers at pepperjam and claiming they buy links, that just isn't the way to do it.

Guess I should've clarified the "cluttered", by cluttered I not only meant ads (which i'm seeing more of in my news listings every time i log in), but also those widgets Believe it or not, eventually those widgets are going to be "ads" as well - that Sprite thing has a widget - hello ads! :( ... but if we were talking just ads, you're right, myspace is definitely overwhelmed by them.
I know a few, which is what prompted my article. One of my friends who's a webmaster - no clue about SEO, read the article on Forbes and decided to poke around for Google's clarification on nofollow. He went to the guidelines and found nothing and said to me... "WTF!!? how do i find out info on this stuff Google's knocking sites for, if they don't have it in their guidlines?!". I decided to dig a little and that's what prompted the blog post.
We're so insulated in our "search world" most of the time we take for granted everyone will know about this kind of stuff, when they don't, then they assume something wrong and that's how misinformation is born. People go to those guideline pages and TOS pages and about pages to find more information about something they "heard" or "got from a source". Especially technical types that don't know about search - let alone nofollow.
iBrian - good point, wish i had more time than the time alloted on my slides to go into that more deeply. And you are also right by "size" some of these communities are monstrous - look at Rotten Tomatoes. By Micro Dany meant in terms of focus - everything else at SMX Social was quite broad (digg, stumble, etc.).
Thanks though for the idea - i might get that sentence printed on something and pass it out to friends and colleagues for just that use ;)

Couldn't agree with you more about that comment Mikkel. In today's day and age, it's not like "Field of Dreams", marketers have to research and put a whole lot more effort into their strategies and know how, when and where to initiate the conversation that brings them to you, and just like you pointed out, doesn't matter if that product is bad or good. :)
ryanol - yes, he did. which is why I am at the heart of things, questioning the ethical nature.
He used Daily Blog Tips as an example showing for image ads that were not no followed. one of those four image ads was of Search Engine Guide (with the puppy), which is a direct competitor of SEOMoz.
This is why some people have an issue with what has happened.
Lisa - I would ask that you go talk to Robert Clough and Jennifer Laycock before you go and say it's a stretch. Maybe you can then understand why they are competitors, rather than assuming they aren't and trying to make this a little more personal than it needs to be.

Great points. And actually Rand could do that, but we'd never know, but I suspect that he did not do that. Only Rand can answer that question, as he would know what his actions were
However, me mentioning what I did, about the competitors - was in answer to ryanol's question "were any of the sites he outed competitors" . I also pointed out that before saying it was a stretch, perhaps Lisa should talk to Jenn or Robert about the whole compeitor thing, as they feel otherwise.

Story: Can SEO Be Automated?
The thing that I found the most interesting, that I didn't realize was the application of this ToS with the 3rd party plugins. That's why I took my flickr and my flogblog application down.
I guess when I was installing the aps, I figured that the ToS of the other sites carried over, but after reading Facebook's ToS, it certainly doesn't work that way. :(
