The search numbers on mispelled words is enough excuse to ignore the spell checker for blogging.

I have to be like the only person who has no time for facebook or twitter or blogging :( Everytime I try, my clients demand more - but.. I took the time to sign up today and not one person from my High School to be found in Facebook - sigh.

So, I decided I'm inviting you all to my Facebook Group - soon as I learn how to start one up!

For generations the advertising budget was usually the first to be eliminated during similar situations. However, many of the companies listed are quite aware that the costs to create a television commercial, such as those run by Capital One, are substantially higher than it is to run an Adwords campaign. If anything were to happen, it would be a loss of personnel to run the PPC campaigns either by total restructure or by selected layoffs - such is the case with all levels of market crashes.

If you think about it, online advertising costs are determined by demand, lowered costs on clicks would be a definite impact on overall search income, but not so much that there would be a complete melt down as the article seems to be predicting.

I am not sure that posting rules would be a "grand" idea, since there are a few contests out there which are beneficial to the community. SMX contests are definitely noteworthy.

Consider the specific criteria that would be of benefit to the community then post them as addendum to a "no-contest" rule.

I think there's too much generalization on paid links. Many SEM's analyze it way too much and alternately create chaos where none should exist.

I have a very clear understanding of the following guideline:

Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.

Is quite easy to understand. If you pay attention to the actual as opposed to the perceived, this policy should be of no threat.

Seriously, I feel those SEM's who think this is such an outrageous policy, should really consider the repercussions should this policy be abolished. If paid links are not to be penalized, what would stop the spammers from taking full advantage of the situation? Or are most SEM's blind to the fact that spammers are a large percentage of their reader volume.

I am in total support of the no paid links policy.

@mvandemar

Actually, you're probably correct in your own perceptions. For clarity however, endorsements are always noted as endorsements in the advertising world (cash for word - Paid by so and so or I'm Michael Jordan and I wear Hanes) No deceptions - clearly Hanes paid Michael to endorse their product. By your generalization, Michael Jordan could turn around and say the same - it's not your business what boxers he wears - but he's paid to endorse, and therefore he endorses and makes it everyone's business.

A paid link without notice as paid, is not endorsement but merely a paid link. By FCC Ruling, no advertisement, printed, televised or broadcasted, is allowed to be publicized without properly noting who is paying for it. What makes the SEM community different? Just because Online Marketing is new, does not make us immune to the laws that protect the consumer. It's after all, the consumer who is ultimately the person who needs to be considered, since it's his dollar we need to fulfill the clients goal, not the client who pays us for a link.

I completely understand the "fight for SEM rights" that seem to be the nature of many SEM blogs, I don't agree, but I understand, however, from my point of view, there seems to be a lot of misconception about what is being fought for.

The right to advertise our clients products for the benefit of increasing sales or leads is something to fight for, but there is no war here - Google doesn't penalize Paid Advertising if it's noted properly.

The right to disguise Paid Advertising in the hopes of benefiting our clients with higher rankings is just simply Spam and I'm all for dumping that war right back into a tin can it came out of.

qwerty - excellent point on the nofollow rules.

My strongest reason for supporting Googles' stance on paid links is: the laws on Payola for broadcast mediums. Don't get me wrong, I agree with free speech on the web, but it's not really free speech if you get paid for it, is it? .. you know that whole goose saying...

You know Danny, since I was a wee little girl, I always looked up at you as the father of SEO so theoretically, this is really all your fault.

Great help if you're running 301's

Canonical issues www.domain.com vs domain.com (linux servers)

rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc]

rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

Link Issues:

Use paths for internal page linking as opposed to strict page names. (i.e. link to / as opposed to /index.html) - this will help with strict page names being found on Search Engines.

I'm pretty sure that sphinn is for Search Marketers and not advanced Search Marketers. Although, I agree the top 10 lists and how to link 101 are a bit annoying, I just ignore them and scroll away to what's relevant for me. To moderate in such a way would make it cliquish and not useful for the less experienced (the mass you want to reach).

I for one, do not idolize anyone in this community, Bruce Clays' articles are no different to me than any of yours. If Sphinn started to moderate what they felt was relevant, they should just close it down, as the power of the user is stripped - and although working at your computer naked in the middle of the night is a common practice in our field - it's not something we wish to publicize or have managed and nitpicked by others. ew...

This video was probably one of the best and humorous I've watched to date. I like Tim, he's a great sport - but truth is sometimes ugly.

The article had nothing to do with increasing website traffic, as it was to increasing web blog traffic. There's a difference between a website and a web blog. It's more advantageous for websites to gain social network connections to improve website traffic via these connections who host blogs, as opposed to starting a new blog - which would take a long time. (i.e. High Tech Gadget meet Engadget the blog) Although, I'm sure many people have the time to blog, this isn't the case for all. I can barely find a spare 5 minutes to finish a blog post I started last year.

I've grown to be a large fan of Clicky since I began using it. I can see so much about individual users that really helps with on-page marketing. I'm seeing much more detail on my ad campaigns per click so I can determine any weaknesses quickly. Overall, I wouldn't replace GA outright, but I am definitely keeping clicky as a side-kick for those quick analysis that can't wait a day.

Yahoo is a giant social networking mess monopolized by millions of smartly placed ad dollars. In layman terms - MySpace on Crack.
