Yeah, if we can parse this instant/constant stream of content into digestible info then the possibilities are wide open.
I didn't know that this post was getting so much attention and I only knew to look because Google alerts notified me when Glen wrote my name above. Does anyone else have a Google alert for their name or am I the only assh*le? :) This was the only story that caught my attention today when I was looking through my feed reader. Brent doesn't post all that often but when he does it's always a good read. Mixx has potential but I feel that it's downfall is the user interface. It's not as simple or as informative as Digg's. If this could be improved I think they would have a winning formula. For now, Mixx reminds me of Facebook's early ad program...looks and sounds great but has a butt conversion rate. If they can improve this, then they'll really have our attention and the average end users will follow.
i've installed it but for some reason I don't see it's presence anywhere in my FF browser. Any thoughts?
hum...there seems to be directories, starter pages, social news sites and other things in here. I'm unsure if this is actually 125 bookmarking sites.
It was a smart networking tactic and I think this is what people are voting for. You're right though Lyndon the post didn't contain much but it I have to say that this was a clever move on Brian's part.
@ Lyndon: Not only is there nothing in the definitions of the words 'strategy' and 'tactic' that differentiate between short term and long term goals but the definition of the word strategy includes an example of the word in use, contextually describing it as "getting ahead in the world". If you see networking as a strategy then you must also see it as a tool to get ahead no?
Def: Strategy - a plan, method, or series of maneuvers or stratagems for obtaining a specific goal or result: a strategy for getting ahead in the world.
Def: Tactic - a plan, procedure, or expedient for promoting a desired end or result.
So I'm not sure what you're saying here. Networking IS a tool to get ahead. However in doing so, genuine relationships can be built and I think this is what you're leaning towards.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you're saying that some networking efforts are a means to a self-promoting end and you think this is type of networking is not genuine. In other words, some people are not looking to make genuine friends, they're just using these connections to leverage their own social efforts and an interaction like this is not worth the front page of Sphinn.
If this is what you are saying then I agree but the problem here is that 99.9% of people involved in SEM are all about self-promotion. So if Sphinn is full of SEM'ers then I can see why they would approve of a tactic like the one Brian used. Most people simply thought it was a clever idea and they may want to remember to do something similar in the future.
So in summary I agree that a post like that is not worth the front page of Sphinn but a networking strategy/tactic of this nature is something that we can all relate to.
I actually read this yesterday and created a widget out of a CSE that I have. We'll see how well this works.
Shit Matt...I was submitting your post and you literally submitted it 2 minutes before! Ha.
Ok so then how do you leverage StumbleUpon for your clients if every post pertains to SEO/SEM? For example, if your client is in the medical industry, their site won't belong within your account. So the only value that I can see here is a strong niche network, which seems pretty limiting especially if you have a lot of clients.
Haha. Danny didn't pay me however I did get a free, slightly used woman's tank top. Honestly though it was a great event and I will be going to future shows.
Yep...the wiki folks mentioned this at SMX. They are sharing the blacklisted IPs with the SEs.
Donna that's really really strange. Not sure why that is happening. That's the first time I've heard this. If anyone else whas this problem please let me know. You can email me directly at brendan [at] squareoak [dot] com
I was thinking about it. I even live in Brooklyn but then I realized all the other things I could do for my business for the cost of an SMX ticket. I haven't even made business cards yet! It would be great for networking and actually putting faces to profiles. Folks scramble to blog about information pertaining to social media all the time so I feel that most of the undiscoverable doesn't exist. I mean...what more could I possibly learn about Digg, del.icio.us, reddit, facebook, etc? $1,100 is a lot to pay for prevalent information. However, I would like to meet Danny, Rand, Vanessa, Michael Wolf, etc, in person though. They seem like good folks. I'm sure there are other potential introductions that I'll be missing. Being with a large group of people of similar interests IS pretty exciting. I'm sure it will be an interesting and educational event!
Hum...maybe I'll complete the registration after all. I can't promise I'll have biz cards though :)

Danny have you seen this Wordpress plugin? It's called Conditional Digg Badge. It Automatically places a 'digg this' badge on any story that has greater than 10 votes. Would love to have one of these for Sphinn.
