Nick, I think your irony detector is a little off. :)

Anyhow, speaking of irony, I found this thread shortly after one of my rare deSphinns.  It was for a story that in six sentences or so regurgitated material we all knew, perhaps not even accurately.  (As you can see, it didn't leave much of an impression on me.)  But it occurred to me that -- gasp! -- I was using similar criteria to those I use when I adhere to the editorial guidelines at DMOZ:

Is there unique information?

Here, "information" can mean either facts or opinions.  Thus, there's a bias to opinions that contradict what has been well-argued before, rather than ones that regurgitate.

"Unique" refers to the question of whether the reader has easy access to it otherwise.

Obviously, a site where stories come and go fluidly is different from a directory in which there's a sharply-defined page of listings.  But the same general ideas seem applicable.

I found only 9 of the 10 ideas obvious.  The tenth was worth the read. :)

Eric Enge: Right. We are clearly in one of those areas where the line is a little blurry, right?

Adam Lasnik: Right.

LOL!
Seriously, good interview as always!

Oh great.  I issue my first EVER invitation for a guest blog post, and the guest poster promptly goes and gets busy with his personal life.  I guess I shouldn't hold my breath here ...

:) :) :)

Congratulations!!!

Actually, you CAN block somebody from following you, Ruud.

Personally, I find Twitter useful for getting quick advice/information, for keeping up with things, for building relationships -- and I've only been actively Twittering for less than a week.

In fact, I've had one VERY interesting business idea already emerge from it.

I also got a nice backlink already from an elite blog.

If something I wrote is old, I want my readers to know that.   If something I wrote became inaccurate over time, it preserves my credibility to show that it's been quite a while since I said it.

OK. We can manually change post slugs and get redirects, as per the experiences mentioned here or the official guidance in http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_2.3  But can we also change URL STRUCTURES?  Eavesy said so in his first comment, but I haven't seen it otherwise confirmed.

Thanks.  That's 50% of what I was looking for!!

I wish it also worked for category pages, but Joost de Valk and I seem to be the two people on the planet who think that having category pages rank is a GOOD thing.

I'm happier serving the less than biggest companies in what I do, which is strategic consulting and other tech analyst work.  The heart of my business is pre-revenue up through $100 million, as opposed to the 1990s, when most of my business came from the biggest software companies around.   It's just easier and more pleasant to deal with outfits where one person wears multiple hats.

As for HOW to serve these guys -- probably, there will have to be a lot tighter integration with the website design business than there is for bigger outfits.  Ditto niche offerings that are repeatable among multiple customers -- of course, that requires some creativity to avoid the drawbacks of sameness.

How did two whole people Sphinn this?

The de-Sphinn functionality can't come fast enough.

Nice, simple, and clear.  I sent it on to a couple of friends/family.
