Story: The SEOmoz Linkscape Ghost
Interesting theory. Either way, they do need come forth with full disclosure.
Story: The SEOmoz Linkscape Ghost
@LtDraper, this quote is from the original blog post announcing their new tool:
"Our crawl biases towards having pages and data from as many domains as possible"
Now "crawl" to me implies a bot, but if that's not the case, fine - but in that case, we have the right to know that it's NOT a bot, so that we don't fret about it, I would think. Certainly, we don't have to be given proprietary info that has no bearing on us, I agree.
Added: And here - http://www.seomoz.org/linkscape/help/crawler - they specifically say they have a bot - That first graphic says "Linkscape bot crawls sites and page".
Google is Fonzie.
Google, in its ever-powerful, know-everything wisdom, tells us little webmaster minions not to do all that "hard stuff" because "we'll probably do it wrong, and make matters worse". Instead, we should just "trust them" to get it all figured out. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that we are all idiots. Perhaps we should just all go back to the days before dynamic sites were possible, so we don't get any of that "hard stuff" wrong.
This is all so wrong on so many levels, it's just unbelievable.
I can't even speak without spitting. Oh, and wait, Google would now rather we give them duplicate content (cuz, ya know, they never get that wrong either as they recently informed us).
Oh, and wait again - That post itself had a rewritten url.
Oh, and wait wait wait - throw usability out the window too while you're at it.
I can't even believe this. They really need to rethink what they've said.
Sure, ok, Google, if you want to tell us that getting the rewrite wrong can be dangerous - fine. Tell us that. That makes sense. But the rest of it...NOT.
so wait, this is because the blog was hacked? hell, that happens every day. fix the problem and you're back in - in a day or so. why get all bent out of shape about it? unless of course, i'm not understanding the depths of the problem, but if all this is just because the site got hacked, it seems like it's an overly dramatic reaction.
oh, and for the ones who think it shouldn't be front page, fine. i give. i think i'll just go back into my sphinn-less world. it was peaceful the last couple of months when i wasn't dealing with the bs here.
btw, just read the update on the blog, and realize you only over-reacted, dave, because u were unaware. fair enough. but now that u know, i can tell you that it happens a lot, and getting back in easy. just clean it up, and it's all good.
You don't consider this to be search-related news? A prominent search blogger has issues with getting indexed in Google, and therefore throws in the towel...how is that not sphinn-worthy? Don't get me wrong - it's not life or death for search folks to read, but i just wonder if maybe we aren't going too far in deciding what's worthy of sphinn and what isn't.
Still, if I inappropriately sphunn this, i won't complain if it's taken down. And btw, i'm not trying to be antagonistic here either...i'm legitimately curious about your comment, PPCblogger. I walked away from Sphinn for a few months recently, and I've only just returned, so perhaps I've missed some nuances about what is appropriate and what isn't anymore. Enlighten me.
Don't see how that's easier than just clicking a bookmarklet. One click versus typing 15 characters.
One seorefugee member found his blog indexing issue to be related to the switch to adsense for feedburner. (see http://www.seorefugee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10624) Perhaps this will help at least some folks track down their problems.
Just to be clear...watched the video...read the words...sphunn it. I have no issues with the content.
Sure, it's just the very basics, but it's something I'd want to pass along to my newbie ebuzz coaching clients who are focusing on lots of things besides just seo.
Gotta give you props for most original Google conspiracy theory so far this year. :)
Trust me, Yura (ANOnym), the thought has crossed my mind to build a bunch of cabins on the back part of my property, so I could host "camp-outs" here for free. Not quite the same "ambience" as Aruba though. :D
pageoneresults, who ate your cereal today? so, am i to assume that you, oh mighty pageoneresults have the perfect setup? that you wouldn't ever dare use a system that might get hacked? that you in fact are absolutely sure that you've done everything right to prevent such a thing? i mean, it sounds to me like you are just standing on some high and mighty podium looking down upon all us fools, laughing at our stupidity. true? well, whatever, dude. have fun on that podium of yours.
kapheroph, if i knew how to fix the problem, i surely would. but i don't. so the best i could do was offer a few ways to help the average joe find a bit of protection. it may not be bullet-proof protection, but it's better than nothing.
colin, yep, that probably would have been a better title.
My first thought when I read it was, "Why would Matt be telling everyone this?"
My second thought was, "I wonder if someone is suing them for privacy violations of some sort, and this is to document some sort of legal position for the court case".
My final thought was, "I'm sure Matt will just say that he thought it would be nice to share".
:)
I recently spoke with someone who is opening up a new seo firm and will be charging a lot of money to do seo work for clients. (a whole lot - a whole heckuva lot more than i ever would).
anyway, this guy had the firm belief that the biggest seo tactic in the world is to use the meta keywords tag. was shocked to find out otherwise. said something like, "well, so-and-so said so". (with so-and-so being some internet marketing "guru" i've never heard of and who has never seo'd anything in his life, i'm sure).
i'm not sure we'll ever get away from this kind of thing.
@toddmintz, i decided to train rather than out the person. i'm hoping i can turn him into a stellar seo, worthy of the prices he'll be charging.
@hugoguzman, i think you may be right about that. i don't know about "majority" or not, but i know i've had experience with a couple of MAJOR agencies that have destroyed client sites with cr@p "seo".
but all in all, i'm not sure we'll ever get away from the cr@p that gets spewed everywhere. i think everyone just needs to always have their cr@p-o-meter turned to HIGH.
ROTFLMAO @seanmag. It's ok, I am older than dirt, so no offense taken, but I think me and mr. mccain might need to have a little chat. :D
Hey, thanks, everyone. Don't forget to go comment on the post itself, though, if you want in on the prize drawing.
"supercheap" - wow, i guess we have different definitions of that. :)
