It's different, I'll give ya that. And it has some pretty nifty features:

* Real-time updating

* Tracking visitors by name (if they enter a name somewhere on your site - like in a comment form)

* Assigning actions to individual users

Google Analytics has better reporting features, though. So maybe a combo of both (which is what I'm trying): GA for long-term reporting + Clicky for up-to-the-minute stats and individual user tracking?

I agree that Ask's biggest drawback is their index. They express "confidence" in their crawler's ability to find and index all of the important information on the web.

I'm not quite as "confident" in that ability.

Other than that, I'm in complete agreement that the SERPs themselves are great!

I can see both sides of this argument. Google was making a legit example in their blog post. And I'm sure at some level money being made from either side could be attributed back to the link.

But at the same time, I see the bigger issue that was being addressed here: Google is very much a "say one thing but do another" company. Look at the current debate flying around about the "wall garden" at Google News.

On a side note: Isn't it just a tad over-dramatic to cut a feed (and loose faith in a resource) simply because someone writes one post you don't agree with? Call out folks that you don't agree with, sure. But one post does not make an entire resource bad.

Hey... why stop there... why not just create an entrance exam that folks have to pass before they can register for the site?

I don't understand why people gripe about others that aren't as well entrenched or knowledgeable in an industry as they are. Guess what? When the "new blood" stops pouring into an industry, that industry stops growing and eventually dies.

Isn't one of the main purposes of a community like Sphinn to serve as a place for folks to learn from one another? If there are no "newbies" around here to learn from the more seasoned pros, what are the vets doing here... passing around the same stories and knowledge that they already know?

Maybe instead of taking the time to make new people feel unwelcome, that time and energy could be better directed into helping the community solidify: Get to know some of the new people... leave a comment on one of their Sphinn posts with some additional information that they might not know... etc. You never know who the next news-maker is going to be.

I'm not directing any of this at anyone in particular, btw. I've seen it a million times on a million forums and niche sites (the worst was an Apple forum I joined a few years ago when I bought my first Mac... now THAT was an unfriendly group... haha). It's not a Sphinn-specific issue.

I just hate to see that mentality crop up here, too.

Disclosure: I'm one of the new people to the community... and I'm sure everyone else here was too at some point ;)

Can't it be both?

It's just one more Sphinn. What could it hurt?

I promise I'm quitting tomorrow. This is seriously the last one. Well... I'll have to Sphinn once tomorrow morning... just to get the day started off on the right foot.

But then I'm done for real. Yeah. Tomorrow is the day. That's the plan for today anyway.

I wonder if Microsoft will have better luck monetizing Digg than Google had...

"just use adblock and no more ads!!!"

I've always thought that was part of the reason Digg wasn't seeing a huge CTR on their ads - most of the Digg folks are savvy enough to use AdBlock anyway.

Well I doubt they were talking about formatting personal email messages to Blackberry users ;) MarketingSherpa is big into email marketing. Maybe I made an assumption based on past Sherpa coverage.

Thanks :) I know I've missed some, especially in the website building category. There are sooo many out there that folks are using for creative purposes that I'm just not aware of. So hopefully this turns into as much a learning experience as anything else.

I've been playing around with it this afternoon. It's pretty cool (although I can't seem to find many sites that it gives anything higher than a "D"). I'm going to run a few tests against it and - should the results turn out as I expect they will - I'm gonna throw it in the package, too!

Thanks for the mention, DoshDosh! I really appreciate it.

I love this plugin. It's completely changed the way I use Google Reader. Between the feeds I monitor for IMM and the feeds I monitor at home for personal reading, I've got about 250 to go through every day. This preview plugin saves me a TON of time.

I love that you can completely interact with the site from within Google Reader (leave comments, browse around, etc), too!

Thanks! I didn't realize that was possible since HTML is disabled.

I recently took AuctionAds off one of my sites because I could never get relevant ads to show up correctly. Sometimes they would... sometimes they wouldn't. It made no sense for me to leave ads for handbags and sunglasses on a site that dealt with psychology. So I dropped the ads.

If I missed something, or if someone else has had better luck, I'd love to know about it!

"It's funny, but seriously, it takes me two full days into a vacation to get rid of the feeling that I must turn on my computer"

What?! That's just crazy! They wouldn't put free wireless access in hotels if you weren't supposed to turn your computer on :P

"nasty fatty" and "lesbian laundromat"

I'm working on a way to take advantage of that any day...
