Couldn't agree more Matt. Our whole company has been developed around the SME market from the start and we have no intention to go for the larger clients.

If you are sensible and keep your processes slick and communication at a high level there is no reason why you can't build a successful search marketing business with the SME market.

It is also a much more rewarding industry to work with in our humble opinion!!

In fact your blog post inspired me to write my own blog post on the topic! :)

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your comment.

As you rightly point out, without actually ranking number one for the term ‘search engine optimisation’ we cannot be 100% sure that the time and effort to get there would be worth it. However, we are making an educated guess and we know from having worked with many clients who do rank on page one for the most competitive term in their industry that they are inundated with many leads of a low quality. Remember that the more general the term, the earlier in the buying cycle a person is likely to be; they are therefore much more likely to be making a tentative enquiry as opposed to a serious one.

We have put this one out there to see if those companies who are ranking page one for ‘search engine optimisation’ do indeed receive many leads that are ultimately time wasters. Judging by the response concerning search guru Jill Whalen our educated guess would appear to be pretty close to the mark.

Thanks

Jeremy,

Thank you for your further response.

I certainly wouldn’t block our site from being indexed if we were to jump to position number one but I would certainly expect to be inundated with a huge number of time wasters; that was really my point.

I would love to hear from anybody else who has or currently ranks on the first page of Google for ‘search engine optimisation’. What is your experience in terms of quality of leads?

Thanks,

Being a women and having worked in the UK SEO industry for nearly 8 years I can safely say that I have never come across any discrimination against women in our industry. I have come across the odd few patronising old timers who quickly change their tune when they find out I actually own the company but they are usually clients rather than associates or colleagues. The search industry is still a relatively young industry and I think this is why there are no dinosaurs dictating gender imbalance in position and salary. The vast majority of people working in search are enthusiastic, dynamic and far more concerned with innovation and getting results than gender. It's one of the main reasons I love what I do!!
