"Seems like Google has joined the forces with Barack Obama campaign"
Very wise decision, indeed :-)
Jill,
" those who read this stuff can somehow manage to filter out the bad stuff from the good."
To filter bad stuff, the reader should have a solid background of whats the good stuff. And thats not the case most of the time when it comes to SEO stuff.
The main problem as I see it is, some "popular names" writing crap under SEO related titles ;-)
I read once that Googlers are getting plenty to eat at Googleplex for free. That by itself should make GOOG a good company to work for :-)

Matt made what Google considers "links that will stand the test of time" very clear, IMO:
- links are typically given voluntarily.
- It is an editorial link by someone, and it’s someone that’s informed.
- They are not misinformed,
they are not tricked; there is no bait and switch involved.
- It’s because somebody thinks that something is so cool, so useful, or so helpful that they want to make little sign posts so that other people on the web can find that out.
As to payment, Matt mentioned: "I only review stuff that I genuinely want to, and accept no payment."
I guess Matt considers "gift for thanks" as a kind of payment too and he rejuct them ;-)
Please don’t send me free stuff
"The title pretty much says it all. A while ago, someone saw my call for good summer vacation reading and the resulting pile of Amazon books that I bought, and they sent me a couple free books, maybe to get a review or a mention. I appreciate the creativity, but please don’t send me any books or other free stuff. If you’ve got a new book coming out, I’m happy to hear about it, but if I decide to read or review it I’ll buy my own copy."
Moreover... Matt mentioned in a comment on that post: " I’m always happy to hear about cool gadgets — just don’t offer to get them for me"
"White hat SEO is evolving and is all the advanced SEO you need to rank well in the search engines and bring targeted visitors to your Web site."
Agreed :-)
andrewsho,
"I think it would have been helpful if USA Today had mentioned that just because you follow these steps, does not mean you are going to rank for your term. "
Agreed.
However, I guess Matt had no control on the way Jefferson Graham introduced the interview:
"You have a website and can't figure out why it's not showing up at the top of Google's search rankings. You go to Google.com for some guidance but get lost trying to find answers."
Sphunn
"if you want to be in Google’s index and potentially receive millions of free visitors to your web pages then you have to play by Google’s rules. If you don’t want to play by their rules then you simply don’t have to be in their index. Being indexed in Google is not a right."
Well said!
It might be of relevance to recall Matt's answer to a specific question:
"So, what are the links that will stand the test of time?
Those links are typically given voluntarily. It is an editorial link by someone, and it’s someone that’s informed. They are not misinformed, they are not tricked; there is no bait and switch involved. It’s because somebody thinks that something is so cool, so useful, or so helpful that they want to make little sign posts so that other people on the web can find that out."
I guess its worth mentioning Danny's comment on GW blog:
"C’mon, Michael — don’t use an example that can be taken apart so easily. Make Matt work for it.
So in A, “if they had a good time, please write about it” is what you said. They don’t have to. And if they do, they aren’t being told any anchor text to use.
In B, they ads get placed without any editorial review, right? And probably the anchor text dictated.
Yep, even in A, the people should disclose if they had expenses covered. But no, not the best comparison at all."
I see them too, but also when changed "us" to "dk" or "uk"

"This might be the first individual Tweet to go hot on Sphinn."
I'm glad to see it going hot. And that illustrates the power of Sphinn in covering a wide range of Socialmedia.

Just wish to underline the following lines of Matt's current post:
The Google security blog has written about XSS holes and exploits before and how to protect yourself. We’ve also written about protecting your site and cleaning up a hacked site before.
Very informative indeed.
However, I would have used on the interview this recent photo of Matt instead of this old one :-)
MikeDammann,
Talking about Matt. I see him issuing a warning on twitter
"Don't lie in a reconsideration request. Just don't go there at all. Makes Matt *angry*! Matt smash spam!" :-)
Why don't we have Grandfather's Day too. I have three grandchildren, you know ;-)
SSS,
Thanks for posting your definition of Blackhat SEOs. HIghly appreciate.
Still awaiting for Jill's feedback ;-)
I guess the subject of agreeing upon whats a Blackhat SEO deserves a thread by itself. Would be very informative interesting discussion indeed!
sza
The new generation of the whitehats are those SEOs who have chosen to abide the search engines quality guidelines and work for a long term successful SEO strategy. They are hard working SEOs who care and respect their clients sites and business.
MikeDammann,
"Blackhat SEO, and I mean pretty advanced BHSEO is going to be mainstream, want it or not."
What? you must be kidding. What I see is the blackhats are defeted one by one. They can run but they can't hide anymore :-)
And a new generation of Whitehats is emerging. Power to them!
MikeDammann,
"Blackhat SEOs become more powerful by the minute. more powerful financially and more visible."
Since paid links traders were hit, the only thing I see is Bitching And Moaning Blackhats. I wouldn't call that "more powerful" ;-)
MikeDammann,
"There are many more effective ways to do SEO blackhat style."
For example?
MieDammann,
"There are countless tactics, referrer log spam and fake links from blogs, how to exploit every hole in the algorithm that there is and there are many."
Thats is spam. So we do agree blackhat is spamming. Accordingly people have to choose what they wish to be; Ethical SEOs or Spammers!
MikeDammann
"Good luck to you, bro!"
The same to you ;-)
