JDrankings
I noticed this also this past Friday and asked almost the same exact question on the highrankings forum of whether or not this signaled the end of Yahoo's Search Marketing platform. The action of shutting down the program (perhaps only temporary?) may not be directly related to the future of Panama in general, but it sure is quite peculiar and leads to speculation.
I've only been doing PPC for about 5 months now and thought I was doing a pretty good job of testing PPC ads....until I saw this post! Gave me a completely new look on testing my adwords ads, and really is something I never even thought of doing.
The thought that you are reducing your profits by running the test ad half as much of the time that you are running your control did come across my mind as well, but the idea of creating multiple controls is brilliant. Thanks Dan!
Would this be the end of Yahoo Search Marketing aka "Panama" as we know it? Was planning on familiarizing myself with it in the coming months but looks like that may not be necessary anymore.
Very well written article. I happen to be testing / struggling with a lot of these landing page issues so the tips within this article all rang a familiar bell with me. Determining the right balance between query, ad, and landing page is quite tricky but as said in this article, the rewards for getting it right are worth the effort of all the testing and refinement you do.
Very interesting article; I've been thinking about (and working with) this issue quite a bit lately as we tweak our PPC campaigns. I've never heard of title tags and meta descriptions affecting quality scores before and wonder if anyone else has come to these similar conclusions. Have never heard of Google addressing this issue either, though I probably wouldn't expect them to divulge what exactly goes intot heir formulas.
BTW, looks your sample ad didn't make it into the article post Jon.
Story: Rev Up "About Us" Pages
One of the more comprehensive articles I have read concerning About Us Pages. I also have been reading a lot about people trying to stop these types of "support" pages from being indexed or receiving a supply of PageRank and your assessment makes a lot of sense. About Us pages that just leave a visitor with an empty feeling are quite common and it certainly doesn' help the credibility of a business when this happens.
Great Post Bill!
great tips in this article. This submission is a two-for-one as within this article is another great article on how to extract search query data from your adwords account into your analytics reports. Double bonus!
I agree, always fun to try out new things! Already went through the guide and it's pretty in-depth. Evryone who runs GA should download a copy of this guide but this is the only place I have been able to find it. Couldn't find it on Google's site.
Great post and nicely summarized. Very true Jeff, a quick read but some good tips there. I just recently got my hands on the Landing Page Handbook from Marketing Sherpa but have not a had chance to take a look at it yet.
Thanks for the sphinn Jennifer. Hopefully this review will turn some Internet / Online Marketing professionals on to this truly valuable resource!
I lost a few minutes of memory after viewing the VF Designer site.....I think I was legit hypnotized
Sphunn because I live minutes from Boston and am a die-hard Red Sox fan......sold on the title alone lol!
Agreed, a good read with some excellent tips but a bit difficult to follow along to with all of the grammatical errors.....I'm not perfect in the least but I found myself trying to make up words and putting them in the sentences so that I could understand and read what was being said...do people actually read and edit their posts / articles / content at all? Not trying to be critical as it did contain good info.....
Wow, that really is amazing.....I just found out that an old friend of mine from high school was working there as a computer security specialist of sorts.....Google is always attracting the brightest people no wonder they are so successful
@localhound - I too thought it was a great collection of resources that would be helpful for others. Check out Manoj's other list of video optimization resources http://sphinn.com/story/8039 which I sphinned yesterday.
That is too funny......I was really expecting to take another quiz and have to admit I was laughing after my socre was tallied after one question! Nice job!
Glad I get to listen to Jill everyday on the whys behind the whats as well as all of the good folks here. I have certainly gained an entirlely new and fresh perspective on why SEO'S do the things they do; not for just making the site rank better in the search engines and all of that, but that there is a true purpose of actually improving the site for your customers. Getting more traffic, sales, etc., is a natural end to having that purpose in mind as opposed to setting out strictly to manipulate search engines without thinking of your visitors first and the overall quality of your site.
Great timing Danny! This article basically takes the blog post that "outted" your test, http://sphinn.com/story/4721, and expands upon it twofold, though your message of not to worry about the tag is a bit more solid of advice.
Your comment "Moreover, beginners are especially likely to spend far too long worrying about getting the "right" words in the meta keywords tag rather than just writing good body copy" rings true for me. Though I still consider myself a beginner in terms of years of experience (though I am much, much further along than I was just a few months ago since joining High Rankings) I was guilty of this. I remember trying to get the "right" words as well as getting as many of them I could, for my previous companies' web site. This was before I had the knowledge I do now which basically is verbatim to what you profess in this article. If I know the value (or lack thereof) of this tag, then I can see where this article is handy for those who still get confused by it.
This is a great post, particularly this point that Dave mentions: If you never go to the gym, the cost of membership was a waste of money; "One of the most common reasons why SEO campaigns fail is because the client does not act upon the recommendations of the SEO consultant they paid top dollar for.
In my short experience I find myself going back to past clients sites to look for changes that we recommended to them and, in many cases, little to no action has been taken. If I'm going to pay top dollar for that membership you better believe I'm going to use it.
Thanks everyone for your all of your advice and support, I appreciate it! This industry certainly does change a lot as I have found out first-hand in only 3 months. We were working on a recent report for a client and had just finished up a long discussion on supplemental results as it related to their site and the next day it was gone! I have certainly tried to keep up on all of the different forums, blogs, sites, etc. and look forward to more.
I have given up trying to explain what I do to my friends and family....."Internet Marketer" or, when they really give me the blank stare, "I work with computers," will usually end the conversation lol.
Great interview as Pauline really asked some insightful questions to Seth. Well done!
