Man, these designers must be getting their optimization service list off a template somewhere...I see the exact same thing all over the Denver area.  The one that gets me the most fired up is the "search engine submission" service...what a scam.

And we wonder why everyone is so wary of SEOs...

Loving this article as well.

I’m starting to see SEO/organic traffic as two different things at this point.  SEO related traffic is really traffic that comes from the deliberate design and modification of a website to meet the requirements of the ranking algorithms of major search engines.  Organic traffic is people navigating directly to your site, through typing a URL into the address bar or by searching for your company's name in a search engine, because they know your company and they want to go to your site for information or for a service you provide.

Looking at it this way, all of this social media marketing should be looked at from the organic standpoint, which means branding and building awareness of your site/company.  I think this is really where social media comes in…a visit from Digg or StumbleUpon might not make you money right away, but it may help build the brand and lead to a sale down the line.

Sure, social media marketing can help with SEO, especially with linking, but like Jill says, it’s no substitute for good fundamentals.  That’s why it seems that we should pursue social media with organic traffic/branding/awareness in mind, not so much SEO (any link juice you get will just be a bonus).

Like mpilatow said, the best way to get IT on your site is to show them some results.  When we started working on SEO, IT seemed a bit annoyed by the whole thing (not as much as the designers, but that's another story), but as they have seen SEO add to our bottom line they have been more and more receptive.

No matter what the personality type, keep your IT team close and do your best to let them know when something they work on for you makes a difference in your rankings.

I think I learned more about PPC from that short post than I've learned from anything I have read in the last few months.  Thanks for sharing what you learned with the SEM community...dispelling myths like those will help all of us better understand the big G.

I'm still picking up videos and news results for search terms like "auto insurance" - so it might be one to watch going forward.

I'm with the naysayers on this one...if Google is pulling back a bit now, it is just so they can come out with a more profitable version of Universal Search in the future.

Hey - out of curiosity, what was the "compensation" that speakers recieved?  Was it an actual fee or just money to cover travel and lodging costs?  Thanks in advance!

Very good article...and a very interesting statistic regarding the improvement of rankings for outsourcing vs. in-house.  Makes me wonder if it takes into account all of the people who are burned by outsourcing.  Of course, maybe people get burned by in-house teams as well...

I really liked how Michael drew the connection between online link bait and offiline magazine publications...I never really looked at it that way, but it makes a lot of sense.  I guess if you want to hire a good link bait writer you might want to try to steal someone from Cosmo :)

A great summary of all of the wild stuff going on in the linkosphere (tm).  Thanks Loren!

Hey jgoddard, could you (or anyone) elaborate a bit more on why using WordPress as a CMS system is "not a good idea?"

Thanks!

Thanks for the help Jill and Nick.  g1smd, you might want to lay off the link juice...I think Matt already knows who these people are. :)

Great post - after being in the SEO game for a few years I am loving that good SEO is becoming more and more about making a kick-tail website instead of making an "SEOed" website.  If anything, it makes the relationship between in-house SEOs like myself and our copywriters/designers a lot more enjoyable. Big ups to Matt Cutts and team for taking things in that direction...I look forward to the day when the most informative, intuitive and visually stimulating sites are always featured at the top of the SERPs.
