Should an SEO firm offer refunds?
Does a lawyer refund your money if you lose?
Does an ad agency refund your money if the tv ad they created for you doesn't bring you as much business as you think it should?
No. No. No.
Well, about #2, some lawyers don't charge you unless you win (personal injury ones), but that's not the same as a refund.
Another spam bot on the loose, spoiling the reputation of a grand site like flipkart.com
How revolutionary on their part...I think they kept it at 200 for as long as they did so that it would be a big deal when they finally got rid of the limit.
Well, I frankly think the idea that linking out to external sites is as important as getting links from external sites is nuts, plain and simple.
The answer is simple. If your client is a fortune 500 company with lots of trustrank, it's easy to make them rank through internal linkage etc. Like if you have the Discovery Channel as a client (they are paying SEOs to help them) you can make them rank fairly easily because their domain is so trusted.
So the question is, are your profit margins really higher if you do SEO on your own? Well, maybe if you have 3 fortune 500 companies as clients and they are each paying you $20k a month (as some SEO companies do) and those 3 companies only represent a fraction of your total client base, it's actual more lucrative to do client work than it is to try and do it on your own.
But a better question is this, and it's the Jason Calacanis question he asked at affiliate summit and asks constantly. If SEOs are so smart in general, why are they not creating much larger projects that don't revolve around SEO? Or why aren't they creating larger projects that do revolve around SEO to a large extent. I mean, jesus god, more than the half the people who use sphinn had the talent to create Mahalo. But they didn't. Why?
And it's not because they didn't want to. Why wouldn't you want to make a company with a very simple premise that you can then turn around and sell for XX million?
Why do so many people who hate sphinn find it impossible to look away? Is it like a car crash?
There is no such thing as white hat SEOs.....hmm. So if my seo strategy is to just build great linkable content, establish trust rank, and then push my way up the SERPs through my own internal linkage, I'm not whitehat?
"I wonder why it's so difficult for people to believe that Google ranks them all by the same criteria?"
Probably because if you make a Digg page, it shoots up immediately, even with 1 backlink. That would tend to indicate that certain sites (like Digg) have a different ranking criteria. Especially when the Digg page temporarily outranks the original artcile. I think it's fairly obvious that sites have different ranking criteria Jill. Why is it that Techcrunch can push itself up the SERPS crazily by creating a few internal links... You don't really believe that all sites have equal ranking criteria, do you?
"Danny, aren't the results of this experiment affected by the freshness effect? That is, as you know, fresh pages rank better for a time after they're created."
It's completely pointless to look at any traditional SEO rules in terms of Knol. Because where do you draw the line? If you are going to look at the rules, then why not look at them all. And if you're going to look at them all, then Knol is ranking exactly as well as it should rank. It's a subdomain of a website with the highest trustrank on the Internet. Can we agree on that? Do you think Google gives Google.com the highest trustrank of any site in the index. Yes, they do.
If a person's argument is that it's unfair that Knol is ranking well, that argument has to be grounded in something other then traditional SEO rules because they all dictate that knol.google should be ranking extremely well out of the gate. And yes, with more backlinks overtime it's easier to claim that they've earned those rankings, but the reality is, based on the rules of the algo, (which is that if you add pages on an extremely trusted site, they rank immediately ie. Digg pages) that Knol is ranking exactly as it should based on the existing rules.
"I would think stuff like this leads to the demise of Google's trustworthiness. If nobody trusts Google, they'll start jumping off the ship. Google is pretty impervious at this point, but not so much so that they shouldn't have SOME fear people will start going elsewhere."
The average user doesn't care that Knol is ranking well. They like it, like they like the fact that Youtube is ranking well. So there's really no fear that the masses are going to stop using Google because Knol is ranking well.

Story: Top 5 SEO Blogs Ever
What about SEOish? What about SEObytheSEA? What about Holf-Howl.com? What about RankedHard.com?
Even if you made a list of 10 someone who should have made it would be left off.
Considering all the external links on the page, the links don't count too much. DP helps things get indexed. I don't think it helps a whole of a lot beyond that. Interesting experiment though.
I thought the main truth that can be gleaned is that Calacanis is a showman, and a very skilled one at that. He did say he thought the comic was funny and linked to it from his blog. http://www.calacanis.com/2008/07/01/seo-best-practices/ Notice the title of the post.."SEO best practices." Always doing SEO regardless of what he says about it..
Story: Why I Don’t Like Sphinn
What I find a bit odd is that some posts about life milestones (ie. Person A is pregnant) go hot while others get marked as spam. That shouldn't be. And if Sphinn turns into a "Happy Birthday!" zone so be it. Most people like birthdays.
Story: Why I Don’t Like Sphinn
The issue frankly is not with birthdays. Everybody likes birthdays, and they especially like it when their birthday is the one being celebrated on sphinn. The problem is that some birthdays go hot while others wallow in 1 sphinn land. So, I haven't read the updated guidelines, but do they say that birthdays can no longer be submitted as articles? If so, would that mean that Sphinn's second birthday, which will be on July 10th of 2009, won't be celebrated?
Employees have chided Google at Valleywag. If you look at the comments of this post, many people rant:

Story: Is Desphinning rude?
Yes, it is rude. The desphinn button is a barbaric creation and helps to reinforce the predatory nature of our society.
Playing devil's advocate with myself: When you desphinn someone's comment, you bring them closer to enlightenment. The desphinn button should actually be called the "Bring this person enlightenment" button.
Story: Is Desphinning rude?
Come on now...even when the troll (Jason Calacanis) shows up at Sphinn and makes his trollish comments? You don't think he should be voted down?

Story: Is Desphinning rude?
"If you disagree with a post that is someones opinion I don't think you should use desphinn,"
Again, there should be a Calacanis-exception. You can't really mark his comments as spam (well you could, but they're only borderline spam) so a button like the desphinn one is very useful in certain situations.
The responsiblity for this swilring out of the control (in a good way if you're Lyndon) rests soley on the idiotic media. Heard of basic fact checking? This could have been an experiment to prove how dumb the media is.
I don't blame him for not being afraid of a Twitter killer. Pownce is probably the closest thing to giving it a run for its money, and it hasn't gained traction yet. I hope it does. It has more features, doesn't have downtime as much, and is generally "cooler."
What's with this latest "there is sexism in social media and SEO" kick people are on. Shoemoney did a video show about sexism in the industry a few days ago. http://www.shoemoney.com/2008/06/13/sexism-in-the-industry-recent-news-new-shoemoneyshow-video/
