Something I could never quite understand the point of; XML sitemaps - thanks for a really great explanation!
Excellent post. Thanks for having the courage to say what a lot of us think :)
I must admit, I'm addicted to it. It is such a shame that it isn't working as well as it could be, especially now with all of us talking about how great it can be...new ppl come along, check it out, it fails, and they're off. I wish others could see the great benefits - so when I see an article like this, I've got to say thumbs up :)
Personally, I truly believe there is a need for standards.
There are a ton of folk out there wanting to optimize their sites and not knowing where to start. If they search for an SEO there is just as much chance of them hitting a ratfink as there is of hitting a decent group.
There are enough great SEO companies out there that should be pulling together to create something.

Brent - Yes, it only has a basic section on social media, basic on SEO too, but it is what they wanted. As for cost, I have to agree with Kim; it all depends on the ultimate goal.
Kim - WHAT??? - now you're stressing me out - don't tell me that...who? I know of one you won't know (Martyn) but he's been a member for a while - but - rarely votes on my stuff (ratfink).

Brent, thank you for bringing this up.
I'm not saying it doesn't take time; it does - a ton!
What I'm saying is that it is low cost *if* a small business owner decides to get involved in social media on his/her own - without bringing in a consultant.
In fact, the reference to Maki points out the large amount of time required (it took 20 hours for him to write one piece). The question then, to the business owner is: Is it worth it?
Some will say yes, others no.
Personally I think it is :)

Michael - thanks. True, it is very dependent on the business, but my logic is that whether or not they are participating in social media, someone out there is talking about them, and they should at a minimum be able to find that info and react accordingly...you are one of very few that uses social media effectively - you should be teaching others my friend ;) And yep, for some it will be smarter to pay.
Brent - okay - I've got to give you brownie points for that last sentence - gave me a smile and got rid of that horror headache I've had all day ;)
Also, sometimes it doesn't even take much. Take Twitter for instance. Yesterday and today they've been mucking up constantly; they really should have let us know what was happeing. Not minute by minute, nor in detail, but just every so often..

Dan - very cool! Thanks. See, the thing is Brent and I cater to two entirely different audiences. I figure if I can help people who are starting out in social media and SEO, those who have fewer dollars but perhaps more time, I really must.
April - thank you. You've hit the nail on the head - that's my entire theory "slowly gain success" - too many people rush in to SM and fail - softly, softly, and slowly, slowly work best. :)
hmmm... good thing you're on another continent. It is such a good post; i'm sorry I mucked it for you. Let's hope the Sphinn team take pity on a dopey woman :)
