Ah... that David's o.k.... j/k.  :) San Francisco has not been the same without The Mihm. Someone needs to Video tape him at SMX.

In addition to being the greatest boss ever (Bill did not pay me to write that - though he did pay me to Sphinn this - j/k), Bill always gets In-Housers excited about building their departments. You should see the crowds that gather when HE speaks at a conference. Hence why I call him The Matt Cutts of In-House Search Marketing.

Going head to head with stakeholders... can only be about ego.  It's unnecessary and counterproductive whether you are on the agency side or in-house.

@ Hugo - I did read the whole article.. I guess it's easier to dismiss my DeSphinn and comments by saying I didn't. Maybe you need to re-write that sentence because that is how it read to me ie: to include BOTH in-housers and agency's doing work with small companies... as this is exactly what you wrote "When you work as an in-house SEO or render optimization services for a small company, it’s relatively easy to get your way in terms of implementation..."

The ego comment was not meant to be a cheapshot... or meant to be taken personally, that is what I think about the desire to go head-to head with a stakeholder - and if ya took it as such... that was not my intention. However I still stand by my statement, that "It's unnecessary and counterproductive."

The opposite of going head-to head is not "falling in line" it's re-evaluating the first case you made, and coming-up with a more persuasive case that speaks to the business/product goals of the people you are making your case to...because in the end your goal should be doing what's best for the company/product that you are working with.

The example of the guy using transcription on videos is not a scam (though his implementation could use tweaking). In advanced video SEO you will see that method used as well as using image recognition, text in image recognition and celebrity recognition - to name a few - technologies to give context to the content of the video to make it more search engine friendly. Maybe some more research was needed on that before calling it a scam....

Couldn't agree with WebGuerrilla more - "If that's your take on it, you obviously have never worked with duplication issues of the size and scope of a site like Trulia." Truer words have never been spoken!

FYI: Similiar results were found by the Online Publishers Association last year

From: Frames of Reference: Online Video Advertising, Content and Consumer Behavior
June 2007:
  • 44% Discovery
  • 43% Go to Video Destination Sites
  • 43% From Friends
  • 39% From Search Engines
  • 27% Links in Emails
  • 4% Video RSS Feeds
Note: Respondents were able to chose more than one

You can download the PDF here: http://www.online-publishers.org/media/image/opa_framesofreference_jun07.pdf

And BTW: I actually search for Dog Videos! Here's one of my favorites:

If i were Jason, I'd pay no attention to the naysayers.  I'd  keepdoing what I'm doing.  Hopefully he is doing this to create a search related product.  And it the product is even remotely decent then many of the people who are saying this is outrageous will be the same people who will call him a "brilliant marketer" in a few months, write articles about how clever he is, invite him to speak at conferences, invite him to speak on their podcasts, debate him, write more articles about how they think he's no good, which will only build his brand even more, etc.  Hey it happened for to that Jason who called SEO Bullshit why not this Jason? ;)

@DarkMatter - you're missing the point... it's not the Trademark itself that's the thing... it's the buzz created by TRYING to trademark SEO that's the thing!

FYI - the comment is tounge in cheek ... but ya mighta missed that as well ;)

Seems to me if you hired an intern based on those "criteria" you be hiring someone who was about to waste alot of your internship training/learning time on social media. Please say that this is just meant for interns and that you do not actually hire SEO staff based on those "qualifications".

I remember back in the day before blog aggregators became mainstream that FOAF was a way to find other "like" bloggers and relationship between bloggers. But since blogging became mainstream I didn't know that many people still used that. I didn't think that many people used Funny XFN either. (FYI: reading the XFN documentation about a year and a half ago actually helped me understand microformats better)

I love the idea! I actually really likle tnash's version.

And re: "elitist cliques and zealot behaviour" - that already exists in the stories that you see sphunn up that should never have been sphunn, but are because someone sent their friends an email to sphinn it.  I think a desphinn will help moderate that and theryby help submissions by newbies who don't have that "friend's clique" get more of a chance to make it hot.

Danny, never let anything I say make ya feel shameful. Unless of course it's while I'm wearing my Mistress SEO outfit, blue wig and telling you to tell me how very, very bad you've been - LOL!

The point of the above comment: Let's all lighten up on each other and get back to work. We're human and have all said/done stuff online that in retrospect we thought we should not have. For me, its the first part of this comment ;) .

I for one am happy you put edits in the original article and am taking your apology(ies) as a lesson to myself in how to gratiously give an apology.

It be nice to see these broken out by region/state.  As an SEO in Idaho may now price themselves out of a job if most of the respondents were from California and Ney York, where the cost of living is higher.

If memory serves me right, the reason most people claimed they stopped reading ThreadWatch.org was because of noisy, circle jerk/ fanboy / attackfest posts that had little to do with Online Marketing posts being popular / on the homepage. For someone reason this post reminded me of that; not sure why though? ;)

Wonder when that Sphinn Down button is coming....

@John: Thanks for helping me start out the SEO year with a laugh "Policeman of Hat Wearing Workers."

@SEOfactor: err, hope you have a good lawyer... and re:"What if I know of someone that makes use of poor tactics without telling their clients?" In this business "poor tactics" is subjective unless of course you are the Policeman of Hat Wearing Workers ;). Some might say that to do SEO without linkbuilding is a poor tactic... however many SEO companies don't have linkbuilding services, would you alert those clients? Aren't those SEO companies still offering great services?.... My advice, don't mess with your online karma by minding someone else's business, get some sleep and if you still can't sleep - get a perscription for Ambient ;)

@SEOFactor: you just described many vertical SEO companies; real estate verticals come to mind - however in MY definition of a good service, they provide just that. But again, YOUR definition of what is a good service is just as subjective as mine and who is to say my definition is more right than yours?

... And yes, Google Ambient - lol. Maybe I should do that since I'm up at 3:30 AM posting this comment ;)

I actually see this as a great thing. It opens up greater business potential for the higher end services that most SEO consultants offer and cuts down on the learning curve for small business clients. Now you have a whole new segment of people who will know what SEO and PPC are... who will eventually realize that they may need more hands-on service or more comprehensive services and turn to Online Marketing Consultants.... and you won't have to explain your services to them.
