SEOQuake pretty much takes care of the donkey work mentioned in this article. Personally I'm not totally convinced by this approach. I've uncovered some very shady looking links when investigating links of other sites. If can find them and see how they are obviously spam, why can't Google?

What will WT and KWD make of this. It makes their services all but redundant surely?

The trick with recips is simple, is it relevent? If a site about mobile phones links to a site about wedding napkins then it's obvious the link is not so good, potentially even spammy. if the mobile phone site links to a site about mobile broadband them hmmmmm, that makes sense, there's a connection.

Just my view of this subject ;)

So in summary then:

Be deceitful
Be sneeky
Be unethical
And, don't worry about any of the above because in business anything goes

.......sigh....

The amusing aspect of all this is the web is full of stuff people make up. Look at some of the 'How to' lists for example.

You know, a lot of SEO is about applying existing standards. Take on page SEO for example, much of it is simply Quality Control, nothing more or less. If website owners used the standards that are well established they wouldn't need people like us to fix it for them.

There are many examples of professions where standards simply don't exist and many where they do but are ignored.

I think this is just a lot of hot air and it will never happen. Give me one example where a comparable profession has a single globally recognised qualification.

Alt tags describe the image as in "This is an image of a cow". Title adds additional information such as 'Click me and I'll moo". How hard can it be? So far as using keywords etc I think although Google may like this it goes against the grain for accessibility unless they can legitimately be used.

I like the stuff about understanding user intent. That's where our seed keywords tool is coming from. Thanks.

It's not just SEO that's afflicted. The whole internet industry is awash with chancers. Good article.

Had it all, lost most of it, lifeline thrown, threw it back. Just watch that stock dive this week ;)

What next, Yoogle? Doubt it.

Tested it using IE and FF. No problems. Must be your end. We certainly don't trap people in our site.

In my view it's the wrong way to use this fantastic technology.

Thanks for the feedback Jill.

However, the article states "I simply want to raise the subject and stimulate some debate" and concludes "I accept getting links from truly authoritative sites is near on impossible for most websites. But is this the answer? Is adding to the spam-o-sphere really the way forward. I hope not."

I would have thought is was clear from this I regard the listed sites as spam. But I take you point.

back to the topic of the post.......... ;)

Good list, mostly common sense though I would have thought. But then, common sense isn't that common in webland ;)

We've been banging this drum for a long time. Fantastic article, essential reading to all website owners IMHO.

I'll only Sphinn an article I've read but I'm not convinced this is the norm. Goog points well made.

Great article and defo out of left field. As for not using the 'man' I'm not sure I agree. In the new order we can use the 'man' without crossing his palm, surely that means we should use the 'man' more?

I've been thinking about this. Perhaps no follow tags should suddenly flip over and start passing juice ;) Why? Well most decent blogs are no followed and if people take the time to comment perhaps they have something to say, after all, they are not doing it for the juice.

I think I've lacked confidence for most of my life - despite being a great public speaker, playing in bands etc. As I make my online mark I'm going to reflect on this post and believe in myself a little bit more. As Bertrand Russell said "The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt."

Are good SEO's really still peddling the myth that they have the secrets nobody else has? I don't think so, surely.......

There's a new 56 page document on SEOMoz about social media marketing. Well worth a read.

One of the issues with respect to small businesses and SEO is they have all to often been sold a pup with their website. If it needs some re-development they can be suspicious and assume you are simply after more work from them.

Just a thought ;)

Unrealistic expectations are perhaps the norm. How many firms do you know who are mystified at their lack of online success when they have spent two cents on their website and had it designed by the MD's son.
