Adsense for search seems totally different than this new scheme.  The pay-for-traffic thing is more legit than paying end-users.   What a logistical nightmare....paying all these people their rebates.  And handling their pissed-off calls when they don't get their payment on time.

Nice piece, thanks.  About 2 years ago I joined a direct-mail/marketing company as their in-house SEO.  I've learned a LOT from what I used to think of of as a dinosaur of a business model.

Great analysis.  I was dumbstruck that Comscore didn't account for # of days in a month when I saw those reports.  Unbelievable.  Of course, they get a lot more free press if their report shows Google going down in flames.  So maybe it was an intentional ommission.

The Adwords affiliate quality-score smackdown has definitely had a big impact on # of clicks too.  Overall it's a good move for the company, but it'll hurt their revenue for a little while.

It's funny how some of the Wall st. analysts that cover GOOG have no clue.  I see their comments on these reports and just laugh.

Here's the story on their other scheme if you missed it:

It blows my mind that everyone thinks MS/Yahoo will be a serious threat to Google.  IF they manage to merge YSM & Adcenter successfully (A big if), then they might have a chance at rivaling GOOG.  They're still gonna be way behind, maybe even more so than they would have been otherwise.  Yahoo was making positive strides, but merging those two buearuocrocies seems like a nightmare.

This deal is gonna slow development to a crawl while they decide how to move forward.  All the while, Google will be making improvements and gaining market share in all areas.

Wheel - I don't see anything wrong with a public apology here. He poked fun at Aaron and everyone who was saying the #6 thing may be real. But once Matt acknowledged it, he was big enough to own up to his mistake. If you take a jab at someone in public, seems right to make the apology public.

I remember a few years ago people in DP forums laughing at those of us who noticed the -30 penalty. I don't know if that one ever officially got acknowledged, but it's pretty widely accepted that some sort of penalty/algo-change was causing it.

Does that article really say that site sold for $350 million in cash + stock worth up to another $350 million? And that the site made a profit of $30 million/year last year? Dear God.

Later, I'm off to develop a Tweeter for infants, or Facebook for toddlers, or something...

Agree with Eavesy, not much to kill. Aftervote looks interesting, and some of the advantages over Mahalo seem legit.

But how can they compete with Google Universal & equivalents? I suppose they can integrate video, blogs, news, etc. But it just makes the scalability that much harder to achieve.

It's so true about sites that don't work in Firefox, boggles my mind. Seems like it would be especially important when your product retails for $280 million/unit and your target-audience is tech-savvy. But apparently not:

What a POS. It makes annoying noises, is poorly designed, and doesn't work in Firefox. You'd think they could do better for a $13 billion airplane. More:
