Great post but it would have been even better if an SEO 0.5 (pre Google) had been included. The first couple rows would have looked like...
Bothering with link requests only if the potential to drive lots of direct traffic exists.
On site optimization for spiders: Hidden keywords, cloaking, near-duplicate pages designed for specific engines.
Destroying the competition: The goal is to completely own the first five SERPs. Single 1st page listing = losing.
And on and on...
Only shows if you are logged in but I'd be shocked if collecting the data for future use in their algorithms wasn't a big reason for launching this. Equally interesting is the fact if somebody thumbsdown your site or removes it from their homepage they aren't going to see it again. Yet another sign that site stickiness is becoming a major part of SEO...
