Putting the whole "good strategy, bad strategy" thing aside.  I think you're absolutely right DoshDosh.  From a psychological stand point, it makes the most sense to pursue something that you are deeply passionate about.  All this nonsense about attention deficit disorder can be fixed without pills.  Passion is the Adderall of my ADD.  When I'm writing about what I love...I am FOCUSED!!! lol!

Interesting post; I agree with your strategy for building authority and a brand.  But, for those of us who may not have the resources to do so right now, I personally think the best strategy would be to land a job with one of those large companies that already has the brand name.  Learn how it works for them so you'll gain the relevant experience.   Then you can go out and do it for yourself.

I see a lot of people arguing about whether SEO is a dying profession.  I'd rather not get mixed up in that conversation.  What I think is that SEO is currently a part of an overall marketing strategy that companies should be using.  If SEO disappears, which is unlikely, then the question still remains: "How do I get people to come to my website?"

If you can answer that question for yourself or another individual, then  you'll probably have a job for years and years to come.

Ok, so let's say I created a site about Myanmar like one month prior to the cyclone catastrophe, and my site just so happened to be about weather patterns in that region.  Now, let's say that I had great coverage of the cyclone itself after the event occured which in return gave me a huge boost in my link profile.  Finally, let's assume that Google is capable of identifying and separating natural from articial linking patterns, so they determine that my site is not gaining links artificially.  Would they still filter out my site from the results because it is so new?  Even though, it is clear that my links are spiking because of the relevant news?

Sometimes I wonder whether it's a filter, or just a question of authority.  I'm obviously not going to be the only site that is getting a ton of backlinks related to the cyclone, so in essence my competition is getting stiffer.  If Google only has ten spots to fill on their first page, are they going to chose "mymyanmarsite.com" or CNN, Yahoo, Youtube, ABC, etc...? Regardles of how many links my site gains?

Also, I think that the news category is a tricky one.  Google can probably see the spike, and attribute it to an event, but what about a brand new site that hits the Digg frontpage which is commercial in nature?  Does Google look at these kinds of things?  Can they determine the difference?

Sometimes I think the algo is stupid, and other times I think it's super smart.  I'm sure Google loves that fact. :)

SEO is only one aspect of an overall web strategy.  It is just one form of generating traffic.  Sure, if the enignes decided to kill SEO, then some folks would lose their jobs, or will need to adapt.  But, those of us that understand internet marketing have nothing to worry about.  I actually think that it's a great time to get involved in our industry.  Not only SEO, but webmastering as a whole.  I work in-house, and I know that I can't just call myself an SEO.  I work on ppc campaigns, tweak html, analyze site statistics, tweak landing pages, etc. etc...  But, it was my experience in SEO that opened my eyes to all of these other avenues.  Now, I feel like I'm a well rounded web marketer, and that translates into job security.  So long as I retain the ability to generate revenue for my company, myself, or my clients; I will never be worried about being out of a job.

Yeah, I don't know.  I mean, if I wanted to create some buzz around my new blog, then I would take the same route.  Great linkbait.
