Uhhh, yes it is strong-arming and a major fear tactic. Even though Technorati delivers a pittance of traffic compared to other sources for most blogs, it will freak unknowledgeable persons out to the point they may irrationally upgrade to 2.5. Which I did on a personal blog with little traffic just to test it, and it broke my theme. And then an old theme I switched to, yeah, that was broken, too.
There are other solutions which would handle the issue Technorati cares about, and their solution of forcing upgrades is so easily worked around this policy does more harm than good.
Interesting thoughts Susan, but the way you describe it "link bait" is not really useful as the engines are now pretty good at discerning quality links. If the terms are separated, then at a minimum "link magnet" would be the better term and what we mean in SEO for developing quality links to enhance a site's standing with the search engines.
Wise words of wisdom for handling the unsavory among us for a little benefit.

That would not be a problem with this technique then, it would be a problem with your redirects and the way you claimed your blog.
Assuming most bloggers don't have a redirect away from the URL claimed, this technique works great. I've actually used it for a long time...
