My income is about 75% from my own websites, and about 25% from the SEO work I do for clients through an internet marketing firm. Guess which takes up the most of my time? (the 25%)
It's still a great balance for a few reasons:
1. I don't like having "all of my eggs in one basket." Having "client" income helps to diversify my sources of income.
2. My work with the firm helps to keep me at the top of my game. Like mentioned by Paisley, I learn a lot more by working with the different markets, and by talking to my co-workers, other website owners, and other professionals in the field.
3. Having my own websites and source of income keeps me from being stuck in a shitty job where I don't like the boss :) I'm fortunate that I really like all the people I work with today, but if I didn't, I wouldn't have to stick around just to get a paycheck.
I also don't take on clients unless it is through the firm (no sidework). The firm gives me a team of professionals to consult with on projects, relaible systems in place to handle billing, and there's no conflict of interest that way.
I couldn't ask for a better situation.
Good tips. Now I need to get my mother's day flower site ready for next year! ;)

Great post. He hit on all of the important factors and the top distribution networks.
If user behavior is such a great indicator of importance, why do Microsoft's search results suck so bad?
Story: New Toolbar PageRanks coming
I get Google alerts every day about people scraping one of my site's content; I don't see what the big deal is. It's never affected me negatively in the serp's, and when you go to these sites it's usually pretty obvious that they are trash.
I don't let it bother me. If I had to chase down these guys I would spend 30 minutes a day doing it.
I have long had a prominent site in the serp's that for some reason the homepage never ranked in MSN, and I have suspected that it was due to a 301 redirect that I had instituted back when Google was splitting off PageRank between domain.com/ and domain.com/index.html URI's. If that's the reason, they need to get with it...
Good article Jill. I like to think of myself as an ethical SEO, partly due to being inspired by your work in my earlier days. I frequently tell SEO clients about the long term benefits of SEO work. Here's a good list I give them:

I always tell my clients that their SEO work will continue to produce for them down the road, even if they stop using our services eventually...
Yeah, how often do you hear news casters talking about "the blogosphere?" Especially with the presidential candidates, it is frequently brought up.
Congrats Jill!!! Your site was one of the places that got me started years ago. The new design looks great!
Yeah, good post Jeff. I need to spend more time on Digg, I really like it, but I'm a newb there. I get your shouts too, I don't know how much help I am, but I usually Digg them unless they're extra-lame. ;)
I think the one about the lost kid... I thought it might have been a spam or hoax or something... I can be un-sympathetic sometimes so maybe it was one of those times. You definitely submit a wide variety of stuff though, pretty interesting.
Story: Sphinn Effs Up My Avatar
Maki, congratulations. I have been a regular reader since the first time I visited. You continually publish valuable knowledge that I make use of in my marketing and SEO practice.
It works pretty good for me. I get a direct deposit monthly of at least $1k. I use it in combination with affiliate programs and direct ad sales. One trick is splitting out advertisers who have better paying affiliate programs. Take them out of adsense and use their affiliate programs instead. I have a few affiliate programs that make as much as adsense, and I negative them out of my adsense ads. To make money with adsense, you have to be in a competitive market, get lots of well targeted traffic (from search, not places like Digg or Stumbleupon), and have well placed ads. Story: Brushing Off Blogrush
I was just thinking that the Cow's blog has been pretty lame lately, then he puts up a good "controversial" post about dumping blogrush :)
Blogrush has sucked for me too; a bunch of credits (whatever that means), and 0 traffic. I dumped it last week.
Story: Sphinn Needs A Ho-Hum Button
I agree, I can think of a few instances where such a button would have been useful. ;)
By not having that the community also sets itself up for manipulation by cooperative sphinners who sphinn each others' stuff just because... Surprisingly, I don't think it's been too big of a problem yet, but I think it has the potential to become one.
