I am currently testing this as well and can say that the results I've seen also support Michael Vandemar's findings.
I'm shocked this hasn't gotten more Sphinns. This is definitely the best article I've read regarding IA, and one of the meatiest posts I've read in a long time. Great work Adam.
I think it's an interesting topic Tanner brings up, but allow me to disagree.
Marketers are getting the majority share of attention and people who may have better quality content are not being seen. This happens in every industry. It's not the most useful products/services/content that thrive, it's those that are marketed the best (at least in the short term). This could be a criticism of marketing as a whole, not just those that do it online. And I think social networks allow more quality content to surface, not less. Using Sphinn as an example, people search far and wide to find the best content they can in hopes that others will find it Sphinn worthy to genuinely help others and/or increase their status within the community. I also don’t agree that to become involved in ‘real online communities’ will help foster a ‘universal feeling of online morals’. And even if it did, I don’t think that would be a good thing.
I wrote a similar post about how to optimize your site for social media link bait a few days ago:

Am I missing something here, or is the report declaring that social media is more popular than porn amongst 18-24 year olds who are already social media users? If that's the case, then what's the big deal?
What about the 18-24 year olds that are not social media users, were they included in this study? Because they are the people that are most likely holed up in their rooms looking at porn anyway.
I couldn't agree more with this post. People rush into social media marketing with no goal or purpose, enamored with the possibility of getting tons of traffic to their site. SMM definitely has it's place, but without campaign focus and direction you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
