@iBrian - I love it! I used to do something similar for spam faxes - I charged an advert assessment fee as if you faxed me the advert, you were signing up to the service. I don't get much spam fax anymore *grins*
This really sucks though - spammers like that give us all a bad name.
As an SEOmozzer who got aforementioned email I have to admit I opened it wondering exactly what they were threatening. Nowhere in the body of the email did they specify anything about the mozz-points issue mentioned in the title.
I'm not a huge fan of that subject I must admit. I think it is a valid point for discussion from the copywriting position - looking at open rates and user satisfaction with the email content.
As BrettFromTibet correctly says, the subject is the headline and the copy does need to reflect the headline.
I think it is understandable that the post was made the way it was. All of us have probably made a post in the heat of the moment we regretted later somewhere online. I can think of several :)
On a purely personal note, I felt a bit weird being threatened by a company I thought I knew and respected. It was a bit wonky. But then I realised it was likely done to push up open rates so understood.

Its broke - it needs fixin' - and trying to force people to "nofollow" their links or get penalised or kicked out of the SERPs just is not working.

I know... some of you have fainted in shock. Others sit, clutching their chests having had a coronary.
Radical as it sounds, spending money on good advertising and traditional marketing helps Google have less of an impact. I saw a banned site hardly lose any traffic while it was banned *because* of traditional marketing (and without PPC).
I know... I'm evil and so is marketing but hey... it works.

I do get 1.07 million links for SEOmoz so I think it'sa just doing a jig.
I mean, we all need to do a jig every once in awhile to clear the cobwebs and search engines are no different - get fit and all you know *winks*
