I wanted to write this exact same article. I just didn't have time. Good job mate.
It's actually different for me because I work for the company and, as much as I'd love to, I can't tell that annoying client where to stick his keyword review!
If I were the boss however, I think I'd have to look at it in terms of the cost of losing such a client. How much time and resources will I save by losing them and how much would I profit from investing those savings into other clients or ventures.
If it became apparent I could actually further the business by cutting off a deadwood client, then I'd politely do just that.
"I'm sorry, it's just not working and we grew apart. You changed. It's not me, it's you."
Something like that.

I must admit I've been dreaming (of a white christmas!) of SEO more and more as I get into the industry.
lsb, it's a common misconception that English people have bad teeth. Hence the term limeys. I believe it originated back in the days of old when our sailors got scurvy due to a lack of vitamins and the royal navy made them drink lemon juice to prevent it. Turns out lime juice contains more vitamin C so was better for them. Anyway, I digress from the topic.
By the way, I really like your site. I might have to test out your tools at some point.

Great article. I have to admit I am guilty as sin for doing this myself. Which is a shame because I'm not a good writer at the best of times!
Tell this to my boss! We don't do ANY link building. It's very frustrating to know that we don't offer something which has such a significant impact.
