I wonder how Google would use the technology...given that Digg seems to have struggled with getting their users to really pay attention to their advertisements. Would the Digg algo be used for something else entirely?
Well, it's quite manual - not automatic at all. We designed the plugin so it only allows one message per link...after that, the function is disabled. We did it with spam in mind - and are trying to make sure it isn't abused that way.
The user gets to pick and choose who to send the message to, when to send it, etc.
It's really quite useful. Check it out and see for yourself...you wouldn't have jumped to that conclusion had you watched the video or downloaded it and gave it a spin. :)
Rereading your comment - I do see your point. I think the scummier end of the web will always abuse stuff rather than use it appropriately...it's their nature and they do it with everything they can. To make the tool useful, you will need to customize your email message and make it feel more natural/personal than a spammer could if they crack it and spam a little bit with it. It isn't designed for spammers and we took some precautions to keep the ordinary user from spamming but that doesn't stop the scum from spamming - I don't know if anything will stop that...
Really quick - and I should have put this in the post - but the inspiration behind this plugin is that I actually enjoy getting messages from people who link to our site because receiving messages like that does not happen very often. I hope you like it if you use it! Enjoy!
I love using different profiles for different functions as discussed in the post...one of the biggest reasons I separate my extension overloaded profile from a vanilla profile is so I can actually focus on my reading or writing with the vanilla profile without getting distracted with analyzing pages, advertisements, etc. It's quite refreshing to take a step back and read some good blogs or books without any 'extension distractions'. :)
Thanks for sphinning! :) I hope this is really useful - we use this report a LOT!
lol - Hope this is appropriate here...I guess I am making it clear to myself that participation levels are definitely correlated with getting great stories to the top on Sphinn. Sorry to anybody I may have 'poached' on over the past few weeks with the 5 or 10 stories I submitted! :)
I agree with both comments - I have a lot of questions about how the research was conducted...
Who was involved? Why were they chosen? Is the sample size large enough? What was the time frame of said research? Which search engines/ad types were used? What kinds of products were advertised?
Then we get into one huge thing that could skew the data: the pure creativity of the ads vs the copy of the description/title tags displayed in organic results...etc. We all know that copy is powerful - was it the exact same copy for organic/ppc or did they vary?
I could go on for a while before I would be convinced that the numbers are a legitimate representation of the entire retail web as a population.
Story: AdWords Quality Score FAQ
I concur! Excellent article - one of the best, most up to date views on QS today.
I agree - I'm a little bit unnerved by what it could do to client campaigns, performance metrics, etc.
Yes, awesome tool and an insanely huge neg keyword list. These are very good finds!
I think there is a report about MySpace and Facebook class differences that are similar to the differences between who uses Google vs. Yahoo! Seems like Yahoo! and MySpace work for those with lower "class" while Facebook and Google attract those with "higher" class. Does anybody know where that report is? Or was it even an official study?
Ditto to MariosAlexandrou. I stumbled into two of them and paused enough to think...what is going on here? Didn't thumb down or up but moved on because there wasn't any value to me either.
Here is the AdWords data fix:

Thanks for sphinning this! I feel stupid admiting I didn't see this one...ugh, crazy month/week!
We may have been notified of a fix...and we'll post it soon if it works! We're testing it right now as I'm writing this comment.
Adam, those are the exact filters that aren't working for a lot of people... :)
Very classy - thank you for this excellent example of how to take responsibility vs. blaming others. :)
Makes a lot of sense - I remember somebody saying that some of the best copy is targeted to an 8th or 9th grade reading level...wish I remembered the source!
Oops...reported myself as Spam! I meant to look at the sphinners of the story - blindly clicked...haha. :) It's been one of those weeks.
I think this post is stuck in limbo - I'm showing a bunch of visits today and I'm confident that a few people sphunn it...perhaps it's because it is 2 days old...or it is a crappy post but judging by the awesome people that sphunn it - I doubt that's the case. ;) What do you think?
