Interresting question!   In the world of sports you are not called a pro until you get paid to do your sport.

I think there are many very knowledgeable people in the SMM world but if you haven't executed a social media strategy, campaign, tactic or whatnot for a client then how can you call yourself a professional?

Which maybe yields another question, can you be an "expert" without being a "professional"?

The link isn't working, the page seems to have moved to here http://www.aimclearblog.com/2008/03/17/critical-context-in-analytic-data-captain-kirk-mortality-rates-red-shirts/

BTW really looking forward to this coverage of SES NY, what a great idea for those who couldn't go!

I have safe search (found in preferences) set on my computer because when I'm working from home my kids are around.

But I would have thought that the default would be safe search and that you would have to change it to accept porn.  Sounds like they have it the other way around?

I think that the increase in competition (from agencies) will impact SEO's who deal with Enterprise Sized clients the most.  For these clients I expect that the agencies will want to replace lost income from traditional advertising, with Digital Budgets.  I think they will be reticent to drop prices.

For SEO's who deal with SME's I don't know if there will be increased competition.  While I see many more SEO's getting into the industry, I wonder if we've only hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of demand. And I have no idea how SME's will react to the recession in terms of SEO budgets.

Ok, I'll admit it.  I'm a scanner and even though I know that people don't have time to read, I still write long blog posts myself. My bad.

BTW Barry,  I looked for a post to link to you for the "ho hum" borrow, but I couldn't find one.  I know you've commented on the subject "a few times" :) but is there something to link to?

"Moreover, they know everything possible about their ranking algorithm (and I'm sure they're sometimes surprised too), while I know at most a few percent of what I would like to know."

I disagree with you on this point.  I doubt very much that any one Google Engineer has that much of the secret sauce.  It would be foolish for Google not to spread the knowledge out into areas of expertise.  Surely there have been engineers who have left before?  If any one Google engineer knew that much about the algorthm then there would be far less debate about the specifics.

I think that the reason the playing field isn't level is because they hire the smartest people in the world.  You may be in their  league but I certainly am not :)

I do the same.  I'd prefer it if the stamp is as of end of post however in case of dispute (two people submitting the same post at the same time) maybe it needs to be at the beginning?

My favourite way of dealing with telemarketers is to turn it around and start asking them really personal questions... they always hang up!
