Some good points raised. Hope Matt replies.
Google's webmasters' central advices webmasters to submit to industry specific directories and at the moment I am in the process of developing a quality shopping directory. If Donna, an industry leader in herself is termed as SPAMMER- then I don't know what people would think of my integrity. Ooops.

@ dannysullivan

"And a lot of them wouldn't exist at all, since we don't really need that many starting places."

Can't really agree with this in its totality. I don't think normal surfers really go to DMOZ/Google/Yahoo directories to search a website. Even doubtful if they even know these monstrous sites exists.
Those who know about them, find it really hard to browse through innumerable categories and still can't find a site of their choice.

IMO, lots of directories would been the answer with 1/2 each on a specific Niche/Topic. This would make life much simpler for all.

Hi Rand
I just discovered this thread today while checking my blog. Although its a no-follow link that it generated, its still good for traffic-isn't?

Is there anybody who would understand better viral or social marketing than you?

Well, that article was just part of my endeavor to try to verify some of your techniques and I must say http://www.seomoz.org or Rand fiskin rocks with their marketing techniques.

Thanks to you that, my directory is now penalized and is going to be a PR0 after next update. But I am not worried a bit as online is a hobby for me and I am always learning. My real life profession teaches me that, life is always a learning curve and no-body can become 100% in any given field no-matter what he/she tries! But one can learn from mistakes and take it forward - thats life-isn't?

I promise that I would resurrect this directory. I must also admit that as a result of this episode I have been able to develop 4 more directories that adhere 100% to Google guidelines and are rocking serps.

I have learnt a great deal from you--which mostly involve viral marketing/link-baits and social media marketing ( I also follow Neel Patel). The 2008 will be a year that I would devote to learning the naunces of social media marketing and prfect link-baits.

By the way I forgot something..............

Happy New Year -2008 to all.
