Seeing more and more of these lately. This domain had been active for about 4 years until at least Aug '07. Would like to say it still ranks because of existing links, but nothing more than the usual real estate junk.
Can't say much more than did Jill. It shouldn't be any SEO's job to sit down to write effective copy then turn around and work on a complex mod rewrite rule. Recommend, task, guide.
Glad this situation got cleared up. The only thing I'd like to ask is that we not call it a "penalty" as it is referred to in the SEOmoz post. There's way too much confusion and obfuscation in that arena as it is. "Indexing behaviour" might be a better term.
Looks like a redirect just might not have caught up. I find the page in G listed under /web2.0?2008 with a 301 to the /web2.0 page. 301s have sometimes been known to impact the SERPs until the SEs get them sorted.
Well, since the ?2008 form is in the index this might just be a Google hiccup; anomalies have been known to happen, I usually just roll with the punches for a while.
Content changes on exisiting pages shouldn't have any effect in and of itself, especially if it's just an update, unless some on-page factors went totally pear shaped.
Haven't been around sphinn for a while, when did it turn into Threadwatch redux? I know it's a good discussion when Dave Naylor pops up with his very, erm, concise comments.
Good chuckles all around, well worth a spinn.
@Halfdeck: Thanks for another chuckle.
Great discussion. I hope desphinn is going to be intelligently used and expect the mods here will be keeping a close eye on it at least during the initial roll out. Making the desphinn comments part of the main conversation would be a nice touch.
I haven't used it as yet, though almost did earlier today. Hit desphin and realized that at the moment I couldn't come up with a better way to say "inexperienced know-nothing wanna-be" and backed out.
Matt posted about this:
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/404-pages-in-google-toolbar/
Takeaway: "So if you’re a webmaster and want users to see your custom 404 page, just make your page be more than 512 bytes long."
To me it's the article that's important, not who spunn it, so I'd like to see the sphinns merged. Barring that, yeah, the first in stands.
I've seen G slowing down somewhat yesterday and today across a handful of very strong sites I checked; I strongly doubt they've all been penalized. G1's "holiday" and Harith's "accident worth watching" are probably closer to reality than a new "penalty".
Sphunn because I got a really good chuckle when JohnMu busted the guy for ripping off a post from blueseo.
Arrgh! That 500 times quote is from a guy whose firm's tag line is, "Tomorrow's Media, Understood Today".
"realistically no one is buying them right now"
Yeah, of the players mentioned I think most couldn't handle it, Microsoft doesn't really need it and Murdoch, probably the only one who can get away with it, is still digesting MySpace. LBO firms would take half a look and see that there isn't an easy way to spin anything off.
I'll sphinn this not because this is such earth shaking news -- it was always only a temporary removal -- but because it's a change from the previous 180-day temp removal.
Most of the get rich quick submits are wannabe affiliates who actually think you can get rich quick without putting in the 14 to 16 hour days needed starting off. The submits border on spam, not enough for me to hit the button; probably best to just ignore and let slowly die.
Story: Is This the End of Sphinn
I'm in favor of the Desphinn button, but gotta' say, that's a great on-the-other-hand post by swags.
Good points all. But even if it were a crap post, I'd spinnn just for the "Celebrities who are likely to choke on their own vomit hold some potential," line.
Ya' know, very basic stuff, but very good reminders for those first venturing into the freelance world -- especially the smell nice part. There are just so many things folks just don't think of today. The only thing I would add is to have a solid online presence, or at least good online rep management.
He, e, cute. But ya' know, Jim, I've learned not to post anything after I've had a few. ;-)
Story: Sphinn Stories By Domain
As I happen to think that much of this social media stuff is a bit backwards I think this is an excellent idea. Kudos are given to the top submitters and hottest submitters, but continued excellence in content is all but ignored. Let's face it, it takes much more work for a writer/domain to produce the content than to submit it.

@g1smd
"trying to fathom"
Yeah, I'm having a big problem trying to understand this social stuff. More credit goes to those whose feed readers update every 30 seconds and shotgun submit everything they see, than the folks who spend a lot of time and effort writing an excellent, informative and useful article.
@danny
As a writer, this is something I think you sould really be sensitive to. Reward the folks that do the hard work, not the ones that simply point to it.
Just color me muddled.
