#4: Search Engines crush our industry.
The engineers get tired of people battling over rankings and re-design in a way that we SEOs have no control over their rankings.
That's my theory... well, no. Not really. I don't think we will pop, but things will change. Things will change a LOT. Just gotta keep reading, testing, and trend-spotting.
while I agree this stuff gets pretty ridiculous, I love to sit back after a solid day's work and watch the shit sphinn around the fan.
oh wow. I would sphin this with each of my fingers and toes if I could.
pageone is just a nitpicky soapboxer, we get those alot in our industry. The vid is simple, but generally good advice. Not work my sphinn vote, but definitely worth my defense against attack from arrogant people who think they're right when they're just wasting whitespace!
what she said about the meta description is correct. or at least that's the resounding opinion I've never read to be opposed until today. Even if you're right, waving your arms around in protest is the wrong choice, you just look like an asshole.
A good comprehensive guide. I scanned it though, maybe it's just late (early)
Very very true, conferences are way too expensive. However, there is still hope! My first and only conference so far was SMX West, to which I drove. Free-to-register Expo Only pass, $150 gas for 900 mile round trip, and I crashed at my cousin's place in mountain view.
Total cost: ~$190
Total gain: 68 buisness cards and a peek into the minds of some really amazing people.
Finally! Been waiting a month to read this info. Shame that Rand's presentation was so............ boring. (comparatively)
@marty I considered using that technique (in 2007), but decided against it because it was, indeed, too evil. I imagine that someone will see the nofollowed links, out me for scum, and it will turn into negative PR.... people would remove their links.
I almost missed the links. Two-Fold Whammy on this list. Sphunn for LOLcats and for a great list of links, broken down well.
You say you don't take on clients- is it because you're planning to be so successful with your linkbait coaching, or is it because you utterly screwed up your reputation and won't ever be able to find work?
Don't answer that. It won't be the truth anyway.
This is the reality of the quite-ignored possibility that link-baiting can and sometimes does have some serious ramifications. Sure, they mention negative branding and all, but they certainly don't consider that it can get you (the SEO) fired. Nobody discussing the endless benefits of link-baiting bothered to stop and think about the possibility that Google might penalize you for it.
Don't take my word too seriously, I'm young, fairly new to search, and I haven't ventured into any strategies that would be considered even remotely risky. My white-hat has been firmly in place for each of these first six months. I've little room to talk.
