Nice list, I seem to edit nearly every post after the original publish so this should be useful.

It's definitely working, I've noticed it a few times recently and Patrick Altoft did a post about this last week.

I can see why Google thinks it could be useful but I think it makes more sense to just display ads which are relevant to a specific query instead.

They're obvious in the source code, couldn't figure out how to actually view "font-size:smaller" on the page though!

"telling senior staff to pack their bags or leave the company", that does sound slightly harsh!

If you're an SEO contributing to industy specific blogs it makes sense to leave a profile link so that other people can see who you are and find your blog etc. I'm sure Google will have some sort of logic towards realising the difference between someone who is active in a specific industries community and someone who leaves spam comments everywhere.

I think this video covers it very well from SEOmoz:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-mondaysmx-west-interviews-will-critchlow-on-ranking-foreign-domains

I'd normally go for domain.com/uk /fr etc.. but there's also a strong argument for a country specific tld.

You forgot:
#11) Write a useful post to quickly build links, hit the homepage of Sphinn and gain a few blog links from the extra coverage! :)

I think it's always worth making sure the site validates just to make sure you haven't made any big cock-ups which might be visible to search engines but not users.

Surely it has to come down to the quality of traffic and how much profit you can make from the 10,000 searches compared to 1,000.

Ideally you'd want 11,000 high-converting clicks! ;)

I'm also noticing "Fatal error:" appearing on blogs instead of the Sphinn button when a story has been submitted.

Here's an example:

Desphinn's a great new feature though! ;)

Would have to agree, looks massively overpriced - especially when they already have cruise.co.uk anyway.

Here's a post I wrote about this:

Good move, Facebook's got quite annoying when you have to wait ages for a profile to load or keep scrolling down for ages to send someone a message.

Maybe they could change it to display the top AdWords result instead, I'm sure that would go down well!

Here's the link: http://blog.seoptimise.com/2007/10/when-seo-makes-you-cringe.html

Not sure what happened there though as I submitted it from the blog but Sphinn entered the title and URL as the letter 1, I changed the title at the time but missed the URL and can't edit this now.

Would be great if an admin could update this please?

I agree, it can also take 2 days for a story to hit the frontpage too so by the time it's reached the bottom of the homepage it could be 5-6 days old.

Although maybe if the homepage just displayed the top 20 stories instead it would kick off the older topics, I think tamar's right it's about finding the right balance to keep the quality high and content fresh which can't be easy for a website rapidly growing in popularity.

“When the invite arrived she could have hit the No button. But she called police.” That's mental!

Some good points, although I think I've only used the thumbs down very rarely for really crappy websites/stories.

Not sure about the already seen it on another social media website reason as they all have slightly different audiences. This story is on StumbleUpon and Sphinn but I don't think that's a bad thing if it's giving people what they want to read.

Tools page is great, I just didn't notice it at the time and the page didn't seem to show up for any relevant Google searches.

I missed it too, looked like a great couple of nights.

There's a LondonSEO meetup at ad:tech next week so going to that one instead.

Cheers for the tip, I'll have to sit out in the garden for the next couple hours now to see if they find me, shame it's freezing here! ;)

Isn't this cheating the system, I thought you needed 9 sphinns to make the homepage! :)

I think some people worry about the toolbar PageRank far too much, but at the same time it still does have some uses:

Can't believe I was that slow! The extra info doesn't appear everytime though which seems odd.

Thanks for pointing it out, better change my blog post now :)
