I am not strong on updating-just-because-they-have-released.
Security update? Bang, set the time aside and update everything
Pretty new whizz bang feature release? I'll wait a few days or weeks, especially until after the first flurry of bug reports and release of the first security update. What do I care about features? The old version weren't broke ;)
I have to confess, I have a site somewhere still running 1.5, IIRC, because the upgrade is too hard (hacked install) and *the new features have no benefit to this site*

Ah, but the fun part is when you are working in industries that don't *have* linkerati. :(Note to self: pull out finger and become the niche linkerati ;)

I always like Rae's writing - nothing ground breaking here that we haven't seen before (and *cough* that's not surprising for a last minute article [runs away]), but good, solid advice, to make you think 'oh, I should try ...' :)

I think the 10-pack is a better interface than the 3-pack.3 results was too in-your-face.Joe naive user would feel pulled to those results and not notice the text organics. With 10 results the eye is whizzed around and some thought has to happen, not the default zombie "must-click" action.
I saw these become common in the last couple of days, but I thought they had put a couple of organics above it! (I have the brightness way down on this monitor and can't see the yellow background) With a couple of organics above it, I thought it was an excellent layout. With only paid above it... not so much. :(

Its great the Google is reaching out the hand the way they have in the last few years, and Adam seems like a genuine person.
I think my only problem with these interviews is when they step beyond their scope. They are Google engineers, and we haven't any reason to think they have strong experience on the ground designing the user experience, so when they say things like
"actually have some text around them. .... That is more likely to capture a user's attention,"
I get a little annoyed. We're reading the interview for information on Google. The boys and girls from the engines shouldn't be telling us how our sites should work anymore than they would think to inform us on how the internals of Yahoo's engine works.
Fine: "links with text around them will be given more weight than a list by the bot" (assuming it can be interpreted to mean that)
Wrong: "links with text around them will be more likely to capture your user's attention"
IMHO

I had assumed that 'reputation' would fix all - I don't want to be known as some ho who will spin anything for a link.
Yes, I am more likely to look at something if 'you' ask me to, but if 'you' submit poor quality linkbait, I'm not going to sphinn it - it would be embarrassing in front of my peers when they look at who sphunn it!
Ignoring the use of sockpuppets, it should be self correcting.

Its the size of the community that is the difference - Digg is huge, Digg gets spammed. Google SERPs are huge, and get spammed. But if someone puts effort into spamming here - it will be obvious, and everyone will look down on that person. The community here can't be huge - I can't see a memberlist to get an idea of the size but surely it isn't more than 100s, and 80% of those probably aren't active. While a link out from these pages is a link, what is the cost if everyone in the industry thinks you are an idiot?

It would be interesting to know who he had in mind .I think if he'd said '95% of so-called SEOs' it would have raised a vague nod, but '95% of SEO experts' means 95% of the 5% of SEOs that everyone generally agrees are any good, aren't.Which just seems silly.I hate arguments that depend on the exact interpretation of the adjectives.

Its an interesting hypothetical. Can't come soon enough, if you ask me.It would be interesting to see if the company would move offshore, rather than breakup, though :)

One can do spammy things with linkbait, but it isn't of itself spam.

"Guaranteed Placement"

Yes, but watch out for the customer who has actually read Google's guidelines and thinks SEOs are *supposed* to offer a guarantee - and wouldn't guaranteed placement be the best guarantee?

:(

nag, nag, nag - I had to wait for hubby to take a decent photo of me!

That's my excuse, and I am sticking to it ;)

Interestingly, Michael Martinez posted almost the exact opposite the following day at

http://seo-theory.com/wordpress/2007/10/23/when-site-search-comes-up-short/

I felt, reading it, that he was responding directly to Gray Wolf, without actually referencing the original.

It would be nice to think that there comes a point that the links you have generated send enough traffic that link generation then becomes a true organic process - but I think this would be a rare beastie and only at very high traffic levels. :(

I'd like it if they had an option to get emailed them as well.

Sure, when you go 'hmmm, traffic has dropped' one of the first things you'll do is check WMC, but it would be nice to get earliest warning :)

I don't spend all that much time floating in WMC - (no really! ;))

I've had to login to use Site Explorer for many, many months now - I assumed everyone did. Now I want to know why I am 'special'! :(

Yeah, but when you are a freelance SEO you only take clients when you are bored - long term plans are for your own stuff!

(Kudos on the 'unique opportunity' dude! :))
