With or without us, Search Marketing is headed toward some standardization. Corporations who prize their reputation (on and offline) will engage with Search Marketers whom they know to execute strategies approved by the engines.
I've seen first hand the fallout when good companies get bad advice and their online reputation as well as their business viability is affected by black hat tactics, See this SEMPDX Article.
It's tough to know who's job it is to help curtail spam and other black hat issues, but as a Search Marketer who cares about her clients' reputations, my thumbs are up for any efforts in that direction. You have a wise and seasoned group, I'm sure you'll come to the right decision. Courage!
